<Be Karkat>
It had barely been a week since school had started and I was already bored out of my skull. Unfortunately, Dave hadn't had any on-campus classes scheduled for Friday which only made things worse. I just wanted to go home and in that moment, I wanted to scream and go to sleep like a toddler. Groaning, I rested my face on my notebook and covered my head with my arm.
Some random girl at my table looked at me and raised an eyebrow. Actually, I wasn't even sure if they were a girl. Not that it mattered. I wasn't planning on interacting with them. Either way, I glared back at them and lifted my head back up so they would stop looking at me. The irrational part of me wanted to get up and punch them, but the slightly more levelheaded part managed to just get me to shift uncomfortably in my seat. I barely managed to keep myself from sticking my tongue out at them like a child.
Since I was doodling in the margins of my page, I didn't even flinch when a voice sounded over the loudspeaker, "Will a Karkat Vantas please report to the front office? You are free to bring your things."
My face paled at the mention of my name before I flushed. Making brief eye-contact with the professor, I got a subtle nod before he went back to droning on about some MiToChOnDrIa Is ThE pOwErHoUsE oF tHe CeLl kind of bullshit. Grabbing my bag and notebook, I ducked out of the classroom and into the hallway.
I navigated my way to the front desk, my mind practically swimming with the possibilities of what could be wrong. God. Someone was dead, weren't they? Kankri fell off of a ladder and cracked his head open, didn't he? He's so stupid he would do that. Would that mean I'd end up in the foster system??? No, I was almost 9 sweeps old... If I had to, I was sure I could stay with one of my friends and actually apply for a job or something. Plus, Kankri was bound to have left money or something.
I was already coming up with plans to escape the country when I reached the front desk. Someone was sitting on a bench next to the office when I showed up, but I didn't really pay them any mind. All I really noticed was that they had their hood pulled up over their head and were slouched against the wall as they scrolled through their phone.
"UMM... AM I-DID I DO SOMETHING?" I asked nervously as I stopped by the office. The shrewd lady on the other side of the desk adjusted her glasses and squinted at me before tossing me a clipboard with some kind of document and a pen.
"Sign there," she gestured to an empty line on the paper with a thin, bony finger.
I did as I was told before actually reading what the form was for. It was some kind of leave of absence document and the name for who was signing me out was-
"Hiya, Kitten," the hairs on the back of my neck stood up when I heard Dave's voice.
Practically jumping out of my skin, I gasped and whirled towards the source. The person who was on the bench before was leaned against the wall next to me and he chuckled.
"Surprised? Don't get too comfortable. I'm just here to take you to an appointment then you're going home," he grabbed onto my wrist tightly under the edge of the desk that the attendant was sitting at.
"WELL THEN WHY DIDN'T KANKRI JUST-" he dug his nails into my wrist to shut me up, the overly-exaggerated grin on his face getting more strained. That was when I understood what was going on. Dave was an angel.
"He's busy so he called me," he shrugged. There were so many holes in his story, but the office crone didn't seem to care. She probably saw this kind of situation every day and definitely wasn't paid enough to deal with it or care. Her attention had already completely diverted to her computer when she slid the clipboard back to herself and skimmed over it. She waved a hand at us and Dave dragged me out of the building.
