Thunder Storms

Thunder clapped and lightning flashed in sleepy Staten Island. There was just one problem- someone wasn't sleeping.
Danny sat in bed, knees to chest, as he stared at the darkness. He counted the minutes as his mind went blank and fuzzy. Silently, shaking his head, he sighed. "I hate thunderstorms."
"I kinda like them," Linda answered sleepily. She was on her back, her arms above her head. "They're calming.... as long as the thunder and lightning stay away from the house..... why do you hate them?"
"They remind me of Fallujah."
Linda fell silent before rolling to her side and leaning on her elbow. "Oh?"
Danny nodded once. "The distant thunder reminds me of the bombs. And when the thunder shakes the house...." he let his sentence hang.
"And the lightning?" Linda asked quietly. She had no idea that her husband hated storms; it was all new information to her ears.
"The flashes from the guns."
"I'm sorry." She didn't know what else to say. She was sorry he had to go through that and come home broken. After a long silence, Linda spoke up. "You know what I do, in the middle of the night, when something's bothering me?"
"What?"
"Snuggle deep into the covers." She slipped back beneath the warm blankets. "Come on. Snuggle down."
Danny followed her advice, settling comfortably against the pillows. "Now what?"
"Now I close my eyes." She did so, "and think of nice things."
"What kinda things?"
"Nice ones. Memories, sometimes. Ones that make me smile, like our wedding day. Or when you proposed. But I also think of things. Like green meadows. Daffodils, raindrops on roses." Linda paused for a few moments, smiling to herself. "Whiskers on kittens." She started singing the song, "bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with string. These are a few of my favorite things."
Danny chuckled and held his arm open, "C'mere, Maria."
Linda smiled and snuggled next to him. "This helps, too."
"What?"
"Being in your arms. It always makes me calm."
Danny kissed her head, "I love you."
"I love you, too."

I know this is terribly short, and I'm so sorry for it. This has been sitting in my drafts for like three months, and it never goes further. Chapters will be longer and better from here on out.
Happy reading,
Cassie
