The young girl looked at her sadly, as she cried.

"Jennie, please! Don't leave me!"

She looked down. "I don't have a choice. Mommy and Daddy said we have to go back to America now. I can't stay."

Lisa took her hand with her own. "Jennie... please. You're my only friend. I don't have anything else-"

"I wish I could stay, Lisa. But I'm just a kid. I have to go where my Mommy and Daddy go."

"Please! We can get married.d We can live somewhere together and you won't have to go with your Mommy and Daddy!"

She frowned. "I'm too young, Lisa. Mommy said I can't marry you."

She cried harder. "B-but! But."

Jennie cried too, a little. "Don't cry, Lisa. When we get older you can come to America and find me. Then, we can get married and be together forever."

Lisa wiped her tears. "Do you promise?"

Jennie touched her face. "I promise. If you come to America I'll be waiting for you

"Jennie," Lisa smiled. She smiled back.

"I'll get stronger! I'll come to America when I'm strong and have plenty of money. And then, we can get married and be together."

She smiled, and kissed Lisa's cheek.

"Then I'll see you then. Promise me you won't be sad."

Jennie looked back as her mother called for her. Lisa frowned.

"I know I promised I wouldn't be sad, but I just... don't want you to go. Please, Jennie don't go." She begged.

"There you are Jennie." Her mother smiled down at the little girl.

"I'm sorry little Lisa, but Jennie has to go now. Be good."

Jennie's mother ruffled Lisa's hair, dragging Jennie away from the little Lisa.

She watched Jennie helplessly.

Jennie waved goodbye sadly. Lisa waved back and Jennie soon disappeared.

"Jennie, I'm sure you and Little Lisa will see each other again," Her mother said to her crying daughter.

Jennie wiped her tears as they drove away from the only house she'd known.

"Mommy what's my name?'

"Jennie Ruby Jane," Her mother said.

She frowned, clenching her little fists. "Then until Lisa and me meet again can you call me Ruby Jane?"

Her mother frowned, looking at her father. "I suppose we could. But why?"

"Because, Jennie is Lisa's name for me. I don't want anyone else to call me that."

Her mother thought she'd forget that, or grow out of it. As it turned out, she never did. Before long, Jennie, having being called Ruby Jane since she was only five, no longer even remembered her own name.

Lisa stumbles home. She had to get stronger. She had to...

"Girl, what are you doing?"

She looked up at her father. "How can I make money?" Lisa asked her father.
