Vol. 3 Ch. 25 Not Your Fault

Ace's POV

I woke up in a bed without my shirt on. I looked around and realized that I was in Uncle Tai's house. I sat up and recalled what I did at Beacon. I put my face in my hands and started crying. I heard someone enter the room and say, "Nora told me what happened. I completely agree with her that it wasn't your fault, Ace. You weren't in control of your own actions." I looked at Uncle Tai and said, "But I saw, heard, and felt everything that happened. I watched through my own eyes as I kill my own teammates. I felt useless because I couldn't stop myself." Tai placed his hand on my shoulder and said, "Hey, sometimes we can't control everything that happens. Besides I think that your teammates wouldn't want you to beat yourself for something that you had no control over." I nodded and said, "Thanks, Uncle Tai." He smiled and said, "Your girlfriend, Nora, is staying in a hotel room with your friends, Jaune and Ren." I looked at him confused and said, "Where's Pyrrha?" He looked down and said, "She died, Yang lost her arm, and Ruby used her silver eyes." I nodded and said, "I see, so has she woken up yet?" He shook his head. I nodded and said, "Would it be okay if I saw Yang?" Tai nodded and left the room.

I got up from the bed and saw my jacket on the bed post. I grabbed it and put it on. I went to Yang's room, knocked on the open door, and said, "Hey, Yang. How are you doing?" She didn't look at me and said, "I'm not doing good." I sat down on her bed next to her and asked, "Yang, where are Weiss and Blake?" She replied, "Weiss' father... came for her." I asked, "What? What do you mean?" Yang replied, "No one outside of Vale knows what happened here. Before the tower fell, the last thing people saw was Atlas attacking innocent people and Grimm destroying the city. Everyone's scared. No one knows who to trust. So, Weiss' father came to take her back to Atlas, where he thinks it's safe. She's gone." I asked, "Well, what about─" Yang cut me off and said, "And Blake ran! Sun saw her go. After we got to the city, she just... ran!" I sighed and said, "Well, at least your teammates are still alive..."

Yang turned around to face me and said, "Yeah... I heard about your teammates. I'm sorry." I looked down and asked, "Did you hear about who killed them? About the bastard who got away?" She shook her head and replied, "No. Why? Who was it?" I sighed again and said, "I'm the bastard. I'm the one who got away. I killed them. I was under some type of mind control and I wasn't in control of anything I did or said. I was forced to watch as I killed my own teammates through my own eyes. But I couldn't stop myself. They were my friends and I killed them. If Nora hadn't noticed whatever was controlling me, I'd probably would've killed her too and still be under the mind control."  I felt a hand on my shoulder and saw Yang looking at me concerned. Then she said, "It wasn't you. Don't blame yourself for something that you had no control over." I nodded and left the room.

I found Uncle Tai in the kitchen talking with a guy with graying black, spiky hair, red eyes, and slight stubble along his jawline. Uncle Tai noticed me and said, "Qrow, this is Ace Dodger. Ace, this is Qrow Branwen. Qrow, Ace is Summer's nephew." Qrow nodded and said, "It's nice to see you again, Ace." I rolled my eyes and said, "You too, Qrow." Tai looked at us shocked and said, "Wait. You two know each other? How?" Qrow smiled and said, "We met on a mission a few years ago. I don't remember you having a scar across your eye at the time." I rolled my eyes again and said, "It happened a few weeks later." Qrow smiled and said, "I heard about your teammates and what you did." I looked down and said, "Yeah..." Qrow walked over to me and said, "I think that your friend, Ray Stone, I think that was his name, would want you to have this." I looked up and saw Qrow holding Snap in his hand. I smiled as a few tears ran down my face, took Snap, and said, "Thanks, Qrow." He smiled and said, "Don't mention it, kid."
