I set down yet another mine with Legolas as my assistant. It was hard work because the weather was warm, we had to constantly use a measuring wheel to place the explosives far enough apart that they wouldn't trigger each other when one went off and there were just SO GODDAMN MANY!!!
"Okay I'm taking a small break. Feel free to take a seat, obviously away from the mine, until I get my energy back" I told my Elven friend and he chuckled before lowering himself much more gracefully to the ground than I did.
"We have already completed two thirds of the task. Perhaps we should head back for the day" he said and I shook my head.
"No, it's better to get it all out of the way now. I don't know about you but I want to spend the next day or two before my possible demise relaxing" I laughed but he sent me a quizzical glance.
"I thought that we all would survive this battle, all of our friends at least" he questioned.
"There will be a few casualties. You, Aragorn and Gimli will survive, as will the king and lady Éowyn. But Boromir wasn't even supposed to be alive so I'm going to have to keep an eye on him. After all the trouble I've gone through for him I can't let him die now" I shrugged.
"I do not want you getting yourself killed trying to save everyone around you. You have done enough" he told me and I pondered it for a moment before shaking my head.
"I don't like the idea of who I'd become if I knew the fate of someone and didn't try to act on it to save them. And as for Boromir, well he's my friend and I care about him so I won't let him come to harm if I can stop it" I explained and Legolas chuckled.
"I am sure if he heard how much value you put on his life he would be very flattered" Legolas said and I blushed a little.
"No! What? No I value all my friends!" I defended but that only caused the elf to laugh harder.
"But him most of all" he stated with a teasing look and I scoffed.
"You're as bad as Karma" I told him, crossing my arms.
"If you were not so stubborn you would see that your feelings for him surpass that of friendship" he said, laughter gone.
I stared blankly at him. God this was as weird as that dream I had, maybe I was dreaming this time too. I pinched myself, earning a concerned look from Legolas, and then sighed in defeat as I realised this was actually happening.
"I think you're wrong, I would do the same for any of you. And regardless of my own feelings I think that Boromir would rather kiss a rotting fish than me" I joked lightly.
"I can bet he would disagree" Legolas teased and I rolled my eyes.
"Come on, lets get the rest of these explosives set and then once we survive the battle you can pick apart my non existent love life" I laughed.
We got the rest laid and then picked our way back to the fortress following the path I'd marked out so we'd be safe. I doubted the Uruk'hai would be smart enough to pick up on the path in the midst of war so I didn't bother covering the marks after us. As we entered the keep all eyes turned to us and I shifted uncomfortably until Aragorn turned to Gimli and said "I told you they would return whole, pay up"
"You guys really thought I'd screw up? I'd never let anything happen to destroy these beautiful features on my elfy boi" I joked, grabbing Legolas' chin with my hand and squishing his cheeks.
He pulled away and frowned, confusion clear while Aragorn chuckled along with king Théoden. Gimli handed Aragorn a few coins and then gestures for us to come to the table where they had laid out my plans and seemed to have added to them.
