We arrived on the Pellenor fields as the great ghost army stood before Aragorn. Boromir looked equal parts horrified and impressed by the future kings resourcefulness. The leader of the greenish ghouls stepped forward and requested "release us".
"Bad idea. Very handy in a tight spot, these lads. Despite the fact; they're dead!" Gimli piped up and the ghostly figure glared daggers at him.
"Dude, you just watched them wipe out an entire army. You really wanna be pissing him off?" Asked Karma with a laugh.
The spectral figure turned his gaze upon Aragorn once more and growled, "you gave us your word".
"I hold your oath fulfilled...go, be at peace" said Aragorn and suddenly the wind picked up around us, the army fading from their greenish hue into dust to be taken by the wind.
"Never did I imagine such a powerful force could be commanded" said Boromir in awe as Aragorn turned to us, "I thank you. We would not have lasted much longer" he said to the future king who merely nodded in welcome.
"We should search the field for survivors. With us here there's a better chance of survival for those injured" I suggested and the men all agreed fairly quickly.
We split up into groups, Karma went with Pippin and Boromir obviously followed me, and I suspected it was because he knew that I wouldn't be able to lift the wounded and treat them myself. I'd conjured a stethoscope to wear around my neck so I could hear the men's heartbeats and determine who was in the most danger and had to be worked on immediately. I was on my third soldier, whom would probably need to have his arm amputated unfortunately, when I heard a familiar voice cry out in anguish. I looked across the sea of bodies to find Éomer on his knees, grasping the body of his sister as he sobbed. It was a truely heartbreaking sound and I rushed over immediately.
"Éowyn...no!" Éomer cried as I dropped to my knees beside them.
Aragorn wasn't far off and caught my eye as if asking if he was needed. He looked rather concerned for the princess of Rohan but I just shook my head with a reassuring small smile and he nodded and went to help more soldiers off the field. Boromir was beside me and looked at Éowyn sadly. I placed a hand on Éomer's arm and his gaze snapped to me in surprise.
"Éomer, it's okay. I'm here to treat her" I told him and he sniffed and then lowered her to the ground for me to inspect her.
Boromir stepped forward and patted Éomer on the back reassuringly. Clearly he held no grudge against the man who had proposed to me not long ago. I went to work, checking for breaks, wounds and fever.
"She was not supposed to be here" sobbed Éomer as he took his sisters hand in his own.
I turned to him and met his gaze before saying, "Éomer, I promise she won't die. I can treat her injuries, she's going to be fine".
The man of Rohan calmed his breathing and then grabbed me in a tight hug that I hadn't expected. I tensed at first but then hugged back with a small laugh. I glanced up at Boromir who had also tensed but now just met my eyes with a small understanding smile.
"Thank you" Éomer said quietly as he pulled away to let me work again.
"It's not a problem, she's my friend. I always help my friends" I told him and then began patching up Éowyn.
She had few grazes and abrasions that I cleaned, and her wrist looked maybe fractured. I decided to bind it in bandages but first I put on some cream that would help soothe the inflamed muscle around the damaged bone. She'd just have to avoid moving her hand too much as it healed. My main concern though was that she seemed to have a fever and it was running rather high, it was already 40.8 degrees Celsius and I was worried it may climb. I materialised some panadeine and ibuprofen in liquid form and then had Éomer prop her up on his lap so I could use a feeder syringe to squirt the medication to the back of her mouth where her swallow reflex did the rest of the work.
