“I’m laying down for a nap,” Belle’s mother yawns, “wake me up in an hour, please.” She nods as her mother retreats into her room from where she’s sitting in the computer room doing her online Spanish II class. As soon as Belle hears her mother’s door click shut and lock, she springs out of the chair and goes to stand in front of the door to his room. She gulps, her fingers trembling as they ghost over the doorknob.

“It’s for Luke,” she mutters to herself. She wants to gather a bag of clothes and bring it to Luke. He could make use of them, the two boys are about the same size. Aiden’s shoulders were more narrow, but hey—beggars can’t be choosers. She wets her lips and pushes open the door, memories flooding over her as she breathes in the familiar musk of his cologne that still lingers in the air even a year later.

“I’m depending on you, Bells,” Aiden tightens his bow tie, “I really like this girl and I want to take her out on a real date. Mom and dad would obsess about her if they knew, so I want to get to know her before I tell them. Just in case it doesn’t work, you know.” She smiles at her brother – almost twenty-one, ready to take the world by the horns and make it his own – and knows that the girl is a lucky one. Belle knows her parents wouldn’t be opposed to this, he just needs to slow down.

“You know the plan, right?” he asks, raising his eyebrows.  Belle slides her feet across the carpet, “Um, yeah, I just have to lie and say you went to Connor’s, then at eleven I have to pick you up from the gas station and bring you home.” She scoffs, hating the lies, but loving her brother more. “I don’t see why you don’t just not drink so you don’t have to do all this,” she sighs, picking at her fingernails.

Aiden rolls his eyes, “You’re just a kid, Bells. You’ll understand someday. I want to impress Jayda so I’m going to sneak her out of the party and we’ll pop a bottle of wine and have a moonlit picnic-thing.” Belle sighs and nods, “All right, Aiden.”

“Connor is going to drop me off at the party and then you’ll pick me up and it’ll go perfectly,” he smiles, showing off his set of perfectly white teeth. “Comprendo?” Belle chuckles, “I guess so, I just feel like we’re going to get caught.”

“Don’t,” he hushes her, brushing her hair out of her face to reach forward and kiss her forehead. “We’ll be fine, I promise.”

Belle clears her throat and forces her feet into the room, setting her brain on autopilot as she forces some of Aiden’s shirts and shorts and pants into a plastic bag. She closes it up and shuts the door as if nothing happened, hurrying to her car and pulling out of the driveway as quietly as possible so as to not wake her mother.

When she pulls into the clearing behind the small store her heart leaps in her chest. She’s nervous, anxious and pushing down memories of her first visit to the homeless camp. Instead of lingering on the visions of being touched by Frank, Belle blinks hard and walks through the clearing and across the grassy area to Luke’s van, setting the bag of clothes down beside the door. She can hear soft snores coming from inside the van and all she can picture is how angelic Luke must look when he’s sleeping – pouted lips, rounded cheeks, pale lashes against tanned cheeks, blonde hair falling over his forehead…
