Chapter 37

I open the door and immediately hear my mom and dad arguing. "How dare you come here after you've been gone for weeks. As if when you come back it will be normal again. " My father's voice is clear and loud. "I only came back because I need to talk to Maddie, not you." I would prefer to walk out the door and leave again, but I know I can't. "You could have sent a message first, right? Or is your phone broken? " My father's voice is getting louder. "You don't have to yell at me like that. Chris takes very good care of me, better than you ever did. " My mother was shocked by what she said herself. I step into the living room and cough. "Oh, Maddie. You didn't need to hear that." My mother says and she sits down on the couch. "No of course not. Go play an angel again for our daughter. " My father says and he walks away angrily. "Sit down Maddie, I need to talk to you." My mother says and she points to the other side of the couch. I walk to the couch and doubt whether to sit. I still choose to sit in the chair next to it. "Why are you here?" I ask. "I wanted to pick up my last things, I also wanted to say sorry for our conversation recently." "Yeah, that's a bit too late you don't think." "I am really sorry." "Mom, my cousin died and you weren't even there. I did send an invitation to the funeral. " My mother lowers her head. "I wanted to go but Chris doesn't think it's a good idea because it wasn't my family." "So? Mom, I had sent you an invitation, if I didn't want you there you wouldn't have got one. " I feel some tears coming from talking about Olivia. "I'm sorry, really. But I wanted to talk to you about something else. I wanted you to meet Chris. " "I have to do what? Mom, I'm busy enough right now." "By doing what?" "Um, school, and other personal things." "And you can't make time?" "I don't know." I'm looking for a reason to get out of the conversation but my mom is already starting to talk again. "There is still something. I need to know for days when you're going to live with me and Chris and which ones with your father. The house by me and Chris is very large." "I'm not leaving here," I say firmly. "Then I have to go to court and I don't feel like that Maddie." "Yes, and I will be 18 in a few months so I can choose where I will live and that's here." "I miss you Maddie, your happiness." "I hardly have any more now, but that doesn't matter. I have to see Jenny in a minute so I'm going to talk to dad." I say and I get up to walk to my father's study. Fortunately, my mother doesn't stop me. I open the door and see my father with his head between his hands. "Dad, I'm not leaving here. Whatever Mom says. " I say and I give him a hug. "I can't lose you too, how am I supposed to protect you?" "Dad I'm almost eighteen I can take care of myself." "Like Olivia?" What my father says frightens me and I step back. "Sorry, that wasn't nice." My father says and he looks at me. I shake my head and smile. "Does not matter," I say and I walk out of the room. I have to get out of here. Everyone here is stressed and angry. I grab some extra clothes and put them in a bag and then walk to my car. I'm going to ask Jenny to help us fight Christopher. I really hope that she will because I'm afraid someone else will die if we do the same as last time.

I don't know where to go to find Jenny so I just go to her old house where Ethan now lives. I hope she's there or Ethan should lead me to her. If that doesn't work I'll go see Andrew. I park my car on the side of the road and walk to the front door. I ring the bell and see someone coming to the door. A little girl opens the door and she has a big smile on her face. "Hello, who are you?" She asks me. "I'm Maddie, I'm here for Ethan." I say and I smile back. "Ethan!" The little girl shouts through the house. Ethan walks to the door and the girl walks away. "Hey, what are you doing here?" Ethan asks me. I ignore the question for a moment and introduce myself. "Is that your sister?" "Yes, Kelly looks very cute, but that's not her personality." Ethan smiles a little. "Is she a werewolf too?" I ask. "We only see that on her sixteenth birthday, but I think so. She has a spicy character. " I'm laughing with Ethan now. "But what are you doing here?" Ethan asks again. "Um, I was looking for Jenny." "She's in the woods with the pack." "Can you take me there?" "Eh yes, wait a minute, I'll put on some shoes and then I'll come." Ethan throws me the keys to his car and I sit down in his car. I could have driven myself but this is more convenient. Ethan steps in and starts the car. "Maddie tells me, is it true that Alex is a vampire?" Ethan asks me. "Yes, she didn't survive during the accident and became one." "I really can't break the wolf code but I like her so much." I smile. "With my powers, I made her human again. It all happened so quickly that I didn't understand it either. She still has big scars from the accident. " "Can you do that?" "Apparently, she's also determined to kill Christopher and kill the nasty vampires forever." "Are you saying she's gonna be a vampire hunter?" "Exactly. She has also become immune to them. She has held that she is so strong. " "Well win-win." Ethan smiles and drives into a forest path. Where the wolves are is closer than I thought. Ethan parks the car next to some others and I see all kinds of tents and campers. So some people really live here. I get out and Ethan leads me downtown. Here is a very large circle in which a campfire has been kept. Some people look at me. Children run past me. I can't believe my eyes. It is so beautiful to see that these people live like this. The door of a caravan opens and I see Jenny's parents walking out. "Maddie, what are you doing here?" Jenny's mother comes up to me. "I was looking for Jenny." I say and I give the woman a hug. "I think she went for a walk with a group. She must be back in a minute. " The woman walks away and starts talking with Ethan. I sit on a tree trunk and look around. Suddenly my sleeve is pulled by a boy. I'm guessing the same age as Kelly. His face is painted like a wolf. I get a smile on my face. "And what big bad wolf is this?" I ask. The boy grunts and walks around me. "I am Myckai. Who are you, and what are you doing here. " Says the boy. "So what a question. My name is Maddie and I am looking for a friend of mine. " "Hi Maddie." The boy pauses and thinks. "Are you that special one?" He eventually asks. "That special one? I think so." The boy walks around me again and then sits next to me. "So is it true that I will become a wolf later?" I turn my head a little and close my eyes. I take his little hand and focus. In front of me, I see a beautiful brown and white spotted wolf. "You will be a beautiful big wolf later." I say. "Mykai, not that curious. It is not fair to ask someone who can see into the future whether you will become a wolf. " Jenny's voice is happy. The boy runs towards her. Jenny picks it up and spins around. And then put it down again. Jenny comes over to me and Mykai walks over to the other children. "Why are you here Maddie?" Ask Jenny. This is the umpteenth time I hear that today. "I was looking for you to ask for something." I say. "Well then ask?" "You know Christopher challenged us?" Jenny nods. "Well, he got away with it while we could have canned it." "Yes I heard, your cousin died in this fight right?" "Yes unfortunately that happened. Apparently, he already has a plan two, so my question was if you could help us. I think if we come back with two vampires and a witch it won't help us. Of course we now also have Alex, but that is different. " "I just heard that from Ethan. How special. I was almost afraid that I could no longer hang out with her. " "No, I am also very happy with it. But you hadn't really let yourself down, had you? " "Well, wolves their prey is just a vampire and I don't want to kill her." "Oh, but are you going to help us?" "No, we have pulled us back from vampire business. Our group has to grow, many of our good friends have already died in the battle and we don't want to lose anymore. " "But jenny, I don't think it will work without your help." "Ethan also told me that you invited him to your house on a plan and the vampires were already flying at him. So we can't have that. " "Could you please think about it a second time? I don't need a definitive answer now. " "I'll think about it, but the answer will probably remain no." I sigh and get up. "Anyway it was nice to see you again, I miss you." I say and I give Jenny a hug. "Once right." Jenny says and she walks away to a group of teenagers. I don't know them so they have probably always lived here. I find Ethan and ask him if we can go back.

A little later I am back in my own car on my way to the cabin. I hope Alex already knows how to fight because we are going to need her badly. The wolves don't want to help us and now we have to make do with two vampires, a witch, a new vampire hunter, and me. I'm probably of a little help but if Christopher wants the deal I'll have to be there anyway. I arrive and park my car next to Luke's. I get out and grab the bag with extra clothes and take them with me. When I enter there is a kind of mannequin in the open living room. Alex is hitting it with full force. I also see a kind of target at the place of the heart. "Hey, Maddie. How are you?" Alex says breathlessly. Luke immediately turns his head around the corner. "So how were your parents?" He asks. "My mom wants me to meet him, Chris. I don't want that at all." I say. "Then you won't. You have to make your own choices. " "I know, I will see. When everything is over, I'll talk to her about it one more time." I say and I put the bag on the stairs. I walk to Natalie who is absorbed in her spellbook."How was Jenny?" Asks Alex and she sits next to me at the table. Natalie looks up from her book and Luke is sitting at the table too. "Not that good, actually," I say. "What then?" Alex asks. "Well I asked her if she wanted to help beat Christopher, more is always more convenient. Also because they have a bite that can kill a vampire. " "Yes that would be handy. Don't they have a thing for a full moon? " Alex asks. "No, they can change at will, but with the full moon they have to," Natalie says. "That sucks," Alex says and she looks at me again. "She just said no, so the five of us have to do it again," I say and I sigh. "Yes, but now you have me," Alex says cheerfully. "Alex we are with five persons and who knows how many people he has this time," I say. "Well, I know, and I know almost exactly his plan," Alex says.
