With a satisfied sigh, Miss Bessie smoothed the light paisley morning skirt over her knees.
She watched the sunbeams and shadows play tag with each other underneath the canopy of  maple and willow oak branches that provided delightful frames for each of the well-kept front yards along Oleander Lane.

To her right, arranged in tidy fashion on a white, wicker table, was a few of Bessie's prize creamers.

She allowed herself a small smile as she delicately flicked a gnat off of her all-time favorite : a pre-war porcelain heifer, wearing a daisy chain round her neck. It had been designed for a national breakfast franchise, and was one of only a dozen that had survived.

It, along with two other cow creamers waited to be shown off. One was a calf, sniffing a sunflower and bee - and the other was a goofy looking bull, in a ridiculous squat under a sign that read "high test".

Bessie hardly ever got voluntary visitors... let alone folks who wanted to see her collection... so she was all atwitter with anticipation and watched the lane impatiently.

Finally, she saw the silhouette of a man slightly limping. She watched as he crossed the mill river bridge and slowly made his way toward her home....

Just then, Ancient Boo streaked by with a large dead rat in her mouth.

"Rude!" Bessie exclaimed, as she watched her friend disappear under the boxwood hedge that served as a fence twixt Bessie and her next door neighbor, Admiral Rusty Tanker.

She noticed Admiral Tanker appear on his home's widow walk and felt the familiar nervous anticipation as she waited for the morning cannon  blast.
