Lexi loved this time of year. Christmas time in New York City is where the best NYC attractions transform into a festive winter extravaganza!
There were open-air holiday markets to hit, family-friendly shows such as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and other iconic traditions like the all-out-madness holiday displays on Fifth Avenue and the famous neighborhood of Dyker Heights.
She had read that homeowners had spent up to twenty thousand dollars on custom decorations to resemble Santa's Fortress up in the North pole. Day or night, as you drove or walked through the neighborhood, it was easy to believe that you were in a Christmas wonderland.
Everywhere you looked, you could see the razzle-dazzle of breathtaking sparkling lights; Christmas trees, snowmen, life-size reindeer, horse-drawn sleighs filled with gift-wrapped presents, mounds of real snow that people paid someone to make for their display, and of course Jesus in his manger. You could even hear Christmas music playing throughout the community.
As she was driving through the picturesque streets to her mom's house, Lexi remembered back when she was younger. Some nights, her family would dress up in vintage outfits and sing Christmas carols outside their home for the people to enjoy as they walked by.
Each Christmas season, she was always impressed with what new theme and decorations the events company created for her mom. This year was especially impressive. As she pulled up to the house there in her mom's front yard was a carousel of horses manned by a young man to safely allow the children to come and take a ride.
Entering the house, Lexi yelled, "Mom, have you seen Susannah's old stuffed lamb?" It had been a few days since she dropped it off at her mom's house, and she still needed to fulfill the last request of Susannah. Which was to make sure Billy was okay, and to do that, she required the lamb.
"Hi, nice to see you too. Yes, it is in my bed. Why?"
Going into her mom's bedroom, she retrieved the lamb from under the covers. It had been covered up so cozy in her moms' bed. Coming downstairs with it, Lexi put it by her boots at the front door as she went into the kitchen to join her mom to help with dinner. "I need to borrow it for a few days."
"That is odd. Why?"
"Mom, you wouldn't believe me if I told you, so just believe me that it is important and that it was one of Susannah's last requests."
"Sure, Lexi, it's not a problem to borrow it if it makes you feel better." Olivia knew that her daughter was grieving Susannah's death. If she needed the toy lamb to help her grieving process, then who was she to stop her? Sometimes the only thing a mother could do was give up her will and allow for divine intervention, trusting in God's love that he knew best.
