It took a couple of days to get her courage up. Oh my God, who knew this would be so hard? What do I say?
Billy answered his cell phone. "Buongiorno."
"Hi, Billy. I am Susannah's sister, Lexi." There was a pause on the line. "I know you probably don't remember me from high school. And to be honest, I didn't even know you were dating my sister until a few days ago. I forgot she had a crush on you back then."
In his thick Bronx accent, Billy replied, "Dah-lin, how can I help yuh?" What is she doing calling me? Susannah's death is hard enough, let alone having to deal with her family.
Smiling at the thought that her sister would date someone that her father would have hated for his slur on the English language. At least her father would have been happy that he was Italian. "Billy, I know this may seem odd, but may I come over to your place and talk?"
"Lexi, not tuh be rude, but I doan see the point."
"Please, Billy, it would mean the world to me if I could just meet you today." Lexi wasn't sure what she would do if he said no. "I promise it will be a quick, one-time thing. If it is easier, I can meet you for coffee somewhere."
"No, we don't need tuh go for coffee. Lucky for you it's not Ferragosto and I will be here for about de next two hours. Here's the address."
"Thanks. Billy. I am on my way." Getting her coat and boots on, Lexi put the toy lamb into her purse and rushed out the door. Smiling to herself at the thought of Ferragosto. She knew the Italian community shut down everything to celebrate the holiday. Susannah, this better be worth it.
Billy hung up his cell phone and went into the bakery to get a piece of pizza. Eating seemed to calm his nerves, bettuh makes it two pieces.
