Without saying hi, Lexi said, "Mom, I need you to call Billy and ask him to give back the lamb. I have to get it back. I need it to save Susannah's soul. Mom, I am so sorry that I lost it." She was so exhausted from all this crazy searching and soul rescue stuff that all she could do now was cry.
"Oh, my dear Lexi, you poor child. Don't cry. Should I come over? You know how much I hate to drive in this weather."
"No, Mom. I need you to call Billy and get Lambie back. Can you do that?"
"I can try, but I don't know why you need that toy. Really Lexi, this is getting out of hand. Are you sure you don't want me to come over?"
Still sobbing, Lexi said, "No, I just need you to call Billy."
"Reverend Hawthorne was just over. He is worried about you too, dear. We think that you are taking Susannah's death too hard. Maybe you need a holiday?"
"Mom, I am fine. Really. I need the lamb back, and then all this will be over. I promise. Please, can you promise me that you will phone Billy?"
"Fine, I promise that I will phone Billy, but on one condition. That you come over here tomorrow night for supper."
"Fine. See you tomorrow night."
"Lexi, I love you."
"I love you too, Mom. Night."
As Olivia hung up the phone, she decided to call Billy right away. "Hi, Billy. I'm Mrs. Constantine, Susannah's Mom. I am sorry for the pain I have caused you. I am the one who gave Lexi the package to give to you. It was not her fault. She didn't even know what was in it. Will you forgive me?"
"Mrs. Constantine, I was in shock, dat was all. It just brought back all de memories in one big punch tuh the face, yuh know what I mean? A hard blow. Yuh is a fellow catholic, yuh wouldn't do something like dat on purpose, now would you?"
"Oh, my goodness no. I just thought that the ring looked like it cost so much, that you deserved it back."
"I loved your daughter so much. She was my angel. I miss huh so much."
"I know. The reason I am calling you is that Lexi accidentally left a toy lamb at your place. Can you be so kind and look around for it?"
"Not dat again, I already told Lexi dat there is no toy lamb at my mom's. Okay? What is it with dat toy? Why is it so important?"
"Lexi believes that Susannah's soul is attached to the toy. She insists that she needs the toy so that she can help Susannah's soul get into Heaven."
Billy made the sign of the cross. "Did I hear yuh right?"
"I know, it seems crazy to me too. But Lexi is going nuts over this lost toy lamb. Please help me find it."
"Alright Mrs. Constantine. Just for yuh, because I loved your daughter so much and I woun't wanna disrespect my elders. I will have another look around my mom's place for yuh. I will call yuh if I find it."
"Thank you, Billy." Olivia hung up the phone. All she could do now was pray that her life would get back to some sort of normal.
