As I ate my oatmeal I scanned the room looking for a suitable love interest for Draco Malfoy.
I needed someone who was smart, kind, and absolutely jaw-droppings gorgeous. I ruled out the Slytherin girls, as I knew for a fact none of them fit any of those standards. Next were the Gryffindors. Hermione would be perfect if it weren't for her crush on Ron, and the fact she and Draco are mortal enemies. I wondered if Susan Bones would be a good match, however I remembered that she had just started going out with Zacharias Smith.
I was starting to lose hope, but then she walked past me. The perfect girl. Intelligent, confident, caring, and beautiful.
Cho Chang.
Being a year older than Draco, it would be hard for me to get the two of them together, however I was determined. Draco would fall for Cho, break up with me, and I'd finally have a clear conscience.
The plan was officially set in motion.
I got up and was greeted by an energetic Draco Malfoy. He picked me up and spun me around, setting me down to kiss me on my forehead.
I felt more ashamed than ever, I even considered abandoning my attempts to set up Draco with another girl, but I knew it wasn't right for the both of us to stay in this relationship.
Still, I kissed him on the cheek. I wanted him to know that I still cared for him, that feeling has never gone away.
"I want us to have a picnic today! In the courtyard again."
My lips pursed. I knew going on more dates was just going to make my mission harder.
I thought to myself, where would Cho spend her afternoons? She was a Ravenclaw, I probably had a good chance of bumping into her in the library.
"Draco" I replied, "Don't you think it's a bit too chilly today for a picnic?"
"You're right, we'd be freezing out there." He let out a small laugh.
"I have an idea, why don't we spend the day in the library? We could look at books, do other things..."
"I like the sound of that! What time should we meet there?"
"Let's go just after lunch, we can even walk there together."
"It's a date!"
In the corner of my eye I saw a tall brown haired boy get up from his seat. Cedric.
Making eye contact with my ex friend, I kissed Draco Malfoy straight on the lips. I know it was wrong of me to use Draco to make Cedric upset, but for some foul reason I just wanted to see him be jealous.
I spent the rest of the day finishing up homework that was due the following morning, I checked the time and then headed to the Great Hall once more to meet Draco and grab a bite of food.
As I passed through the corridors of the castle I noticed Harry Potter standing alone, looking quite upset. We weren't close or anything, but I knew by his face that he needed someone there for him right then and there- even if that someone was a random Hufflepuff.
"Hi Harry" I said walking up to him, "I don't think you know me, but I saw you looking down and I thought you would enjoy some company."
"Nonsense, you're the Hufflepuff from my Defense of the Dark Arts class. You're incredibly smart, I'm surprised you aren't in Ravenclaw."
"I'm not a fan of the people in that house, they seem so snooty."
"Slytherins are the real annoying ones. I can't stand anyone in that house."
I pushed myself onto the wall right next to him. I guess I knew this wasn't going to be a short conversation.
"There are some good Slytherins..."
"You only day that because you're dating one, the most rotten one of all."
"You know, you and Draco seem to have a lot in common, maybe you should try to be friends."
"That might be how it works in Hufflepuff, but not in Gryffindor. Draco is my enemy. He's constantly in my head, I can't stop thinking about his rotten face."
Trying to derail the conversation, I asked Harry how he was feeling, since that was my original intention.
"I guess I'm just a bit nervous about the Tournament, is all. Did you know the first task is going to be dragons?"
I gulped. Dragons? How was Harry going to fight off a dragon? That's insane, how on earth is the school going to allow it?!
"Dragons? How do you know?"
"I saw them, the school's gamekeeper, Hagrid, showed them to me. He's a friend of mine."
"And are the other champions aware of this as well?!"
Harry shook his head. He was the only champion to know what he was going up against, the rest didn't even have a clue! What if they got hurt?...
What if Cedric got hurt?
Sure, we weren't friends anymore, but deep inside I still cared for him. The thought of him facing a dragon, alone, was nightmare fuel. He had to know, for his own safety. I knew that I couldn't tell him, but Harry could.
"Harry you have to warn the others about the dragons!"
"If I tell them people will know that Hagrid was the one who showed them to me! He could lose his job!"
"Well then at least tell Cedric! He's the other Hogwarts champion, in a way the two of you are working together to get a win for Hogwarts."
"You have a good point. Fine, I'll tell Cedric, but why do you care if he knows or not?"
"He's my best friend. I can't see him get hurt."
"I'll be sure to tell him about the dragons."
I thanked him and waved goodbye as I continued my way to the Great Hall. I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that I called Cedric my best friend, when he wasn't, not anymore at least.
No, Cedric was my best friend. He always has been and always will be. I have to fight for our friendship, because the truth was, it meant more than anything to me.
