"Cedric." I whispered into a young man's ear. I rubbed my hand through his thick brown hair, but he didn't budge. He was completely passed out.
I'm a bit louder this time, "Cedric!"
No answer. I sigh and lay down on my air-mattress and look at the sky through the holes on the roof of the little attic I was staying in. I don't know why I had woken up so early that day. Was it my excitement about the first day of school that couldn't keep me asleep, or was it the fear I felt of having to go back?
On the last day of school of my third year, I had gotten into the most terrible argument with my (now ex) boyfriend, Draco Malfoy. It slowly escalated and had become a duel. Unfortunately, I was the victor. While most people would see this as a big win, I wished that Draco would have beaten me instead. His injuries had been severe, as I had stunned him so harshly it left him with a third degree burn. I knew I was going to face trouble for this. His dad being my father's boss I begged him not to drag our parents into our fight, and to my surprise he agreed. He was a bit too nice about the ordeal actually, which made me worried because I knew it was not normal for him to be so forgiving, and that he must have something up his sleeve...
And so I left Hogwarts with a warning from Dumbledore about my behavior, and with anxiety about the revenge that Draco had planned for me when I arrived. I was ready to be publicly humiliated by him in front of the whole school, he probably was going to hex me or something and make me look like a fool. My only wish was that he would not interfere with my father's job. Nothing else mattered more to me than my family. My dad losing his job would ruin us.
Actually there was one other thing that mattered to me, and he was dead asleep right next to me. Although, I guess I do consider him to be somewhat part of my family, I have known him since I was 6.
I stared at him with care in my eyes. His small bed was barely enough to fit his extremely large body. It wasn't an exaggeration to say Cedric had grown two times his size this summer. His little blanket somehow covered his arms and legs, and his jaw was slightly open as he steadily breathed. I wondered what he dreamt of at night, keeping him asleep for so long. He had been like this since I met him, barely waking up in time for class because of how much he loved to sleep. I guess I was like that as well, but this year with everything on my mind with Draco it was hard to have a peaceful night. I just wished Cedric would wake up so I wouldn't be alone with my thoughts.
I guessed that I didn't really have much of a choice but to get up and go. I saw to it that breakfast would be made while Amos (Cedric's father) and his son slept in their separate bedrooms. I wasn't the greatest cook myself, I could barely make cereal, but I knew my kind gesture would be appreciated by the two of them, knowing how hard of sleepers they were. Besides, I had nothing better to do anyways.
I boiled a few eggs and made toast, one of the Diggory's favorite breakfasts. After finishing I woke the two of them and brought them downstairs, they were very pleased with the meal I made.
"Your cooking is better than mine will ever be darling!" Amos said with a mouth full a food.
"Thank you Mr. Amos." I replied, handing him a napkin
"How many times do I have to tell ya? You and I are like family, you call me Amos, understand? No Mister needed."
"Okay Mr. Amos." I said with emphasis on the mister, it was our little inside joke we had. I had been taught to be exceptionally polite with adults as a kid, and it's hard to get rid of that habit, even with close friends.
