What was supposed to be the best night of life immediately turned into the worst. I couldn't believe it. My life was about to be ruined and it was all of my fault.
It wasn't fair. Why is it so hard for me to fall in love? I wanted to love Draco, I wanted to be a good girlfriend- but I couldn't. This was just the way my life was going to be and I resented it.
In the midst of my sobbing I heard footsteps behind me and I wiped my tears to go investigate the noise. I hoped that it wasn't Malfoy coming back to torture me again, but to my delight it was my best friend who came to check on me.
"Cedric!" I ran into his arms, "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at the dance?"
"I should be asking you the same question. I saw Draco storm into the Great Hall without you and figured that the two of you got into a fight."
"Ced, I've really done it this time. He's going to tell his father to fire mine."
"He can't do that!"
"Yes he can! And it's all because I couldn't force myself to love him."
Hiding a small smile, Cedric asked, "You never loved Draco Malfoy?"
"I never have."
We stood there silently with nothing left to say, I couldn't blame Cedric for being happy about my breakup with Draco, the two of them never really got along.
Cedric cleared his throat, "Honestly, the Yule Ball is overrated, it gets boring after like 15 minutes of being in there."
"Tell me about it, I can only listen to the Weird Sisters for so long."
"How about we have our own little dance right here."
"I like that idea."
Cedric pointed his wand to a nearby tree and transfigured it into a harp, which played Waltz of the Flowers.
I took his hand, and we began to dance. We went around the entire quad, the stars illuminating the night sky. Spinning from time to time, not once stepping on each other's toes. Cedric and I danced together many times before the ball, as we practiced for his first dance, but this felt different in a way. It was intimate and real.
The music came to a halt and we stood there, meters away from each other, leaning closer and closer until-
"Boy that sure was a good time!" A random student shouted.
Another student replied, "It was the greatest night of our lives! Oh what I'd do to have another ball tomorrow."
And just like that the quad was filled with my peers who were exiting the Great Hall to go to their dorms. Cedric quickly transfigured the harp back into a tree, and we both walked back to the common room together.
He dropped me off in front of my dorm, I turned to him and grabbed his hand.
"I had a splendid time tonight Ced."
"As did I. I'll see you after break."
And with that he left to go to his dorm. I collapsed onto my bed and slept like a newborn baby that night, thinking of my dance with Cedric Diggory. He somehow turned my awful night into one that I'd never want to forget.
I woke up the next morning to go to breakfast and was shocked to see Draco Malfoy sitting by himself on the other side of the Great Hall (which was back to normal after the dance). He had always spent the break with his parents, I wondered why he decided to stay this year. I was close to going up and asking him before I remembered that we had broken up, again.
I then realized that I'd have no friends to keep me company during break. I wanted to go home, but my sister came down with the fever and my parents insisted that I stay at Hogwarts to avoid getting sick as well. I'd truly much rather be sick than spend an entire two weeks alone at Hogwarts, but there was no turning back so I decided to make the best of my time alone.
I caught up on work assigned to me over break, and took extra time to study for a few quizzes I'd be taking when classes started again. I spent most of my time in the library, studying or reading new books, anything to keep myself busy.
About a week had gone by and I was bored out of my mind. I was helping the House Elves in the kitchen when I heard a loud crash in the back.
I looked around the corner to see Fred and George with stolen food and water.
"What are the two of you up to?" I asked.
"We'll let you in on it if you promise not to tell." Fred replied.
"Do I look like a goody two-shoes Ravenclaw to you guys?"
George snickered, "No, but you do look like a goody two-shoes Hufflepuff."
The two of them laughed as I grew more impatient.
"Just cut the chase and tell me what you're doing!"
"Fine fine," Fred grinned, "We're throwing a New Years party in the Gryffindor common room. All houses are going to be invited, so we need some food. You don't want your peers to starve do you?"
I rolled my eyes, "You're giving your guests bread and water?"
"Of course not! We're going to transfigure it into cake and rum!" George answered.
"So are you coming or not?"
"I guess I have nothing better to do."
They both smiled, "Excellent, we'll see you there at 11:00, the password is Balderdash."
They left and I continued with my work. Say what you want about the twins, they're mischievous and all, but you gotta love them.
