The next day Cedric's face was back to normal and he was applauded by the students around him wherever he'd go.  A trend went around where people wore 'Potter Stinks/ Support Cedric Diggory!' badges.  Both Cedric and I hated them, but none of our convincing could get us to get Malfoy to take it off.

When Cedric opened his egg in the common room it began screeching so loudly that I felt as if my eardrums had shattered.  Students came out from their dormitories to examine the noise, but we assured them that nothing was wrong.

"I wonder what the next task is supposed to be.  I mean, this is an awful clue." He said.

"Maybe you'll be facing mandrakes."

We both laughed, imagining the possibility of the Triwizard Champions having to fight off those hideous plants.

We left the egg alone, deciding that we'd decipher it after holiday break.  It seemed far away at first, but winter slowly creeped up on us, as the falling leaves were soon replaced by large amounts of snow.

We were told to gather together with the head of each house for a special announcement.  Cedric and I sat across from each other, trying not to snicker every time we made eye contact.

"Students, you are gathered here today because Hogwarts is having a special event this Christmas!"  Professor Sprout began.

"This year, Hogwarts will be hosting an official school dance in the Great Hall, the Yule Ball!"

The girls all giggled excitedly, and the boys groaned.  We whispered together wondering what we would wear, and who our dates would be, but we were shortly interrupted by Professor Sprout once more.

"Students can bring their own partner to the dance, however champions-," She turned towards Cedric, "will be required to have a partner and participate in the first dance.  Your attire must be appropriate and you will be on your best behavior.  We are upholding the reputation of Hogwarts at this dance, and any misconduct will result in suspension and in some cases, expulsion.  Now go back to you chittering."

We were dismissed and I ran up to Cedric.

"Isn't this so exciting!  A school dance!  I can't wait to pick out a dress..."

He shrugged and put his arm behind his neck, "You know, since I have to bring a partner and all, maybe the two of us should go together.  You're a much better dancer than me and can help me out, besides it would be really fun to spend the night together."

My lips pursed, "Ced, you know I have to go with Draco."

"Right."  He looked disappointed in himself.

"Don't be upset, you're Golden Boy Cedric Diggory!  You can ask any girl out and they'll say yes.  And when they do we can all go as double dates."

Ignoring every word I said he continued, "Speaking of Malfoy, I think he's getting a little bit too close to Cho.  I swore I heard them flirting."

Not this again, I knew he was looking out for me, but could he seriously just mind his own business?

"We've already talked about this.  Draco and Cho are friends and I trust him."

"Well I don't, and if I have to take Cho away from Draco to get the two of them to leave each other alone, I'll do it."

"Cedric please don't get involved in this."
