Newt was tired of Alby's lectures. He was tried of everything. He'd been running this stupid maze for weeks now with no sign of escape. Everyday, Alby told Newt to focus, asking why he seemed so up in his head. When Newt explained it was because he had fuzzy memories of someone that he was trying to bring to the forefront, he was just met with screams in his face. Alby saw absolutely no value in trying to dig these faint memories out in hopes they could help find a way out of the maze. As a matter of fact, Newt questioned if he even had any humanity in him.
"How can you miss someone? None of us can remember anything or anyone!" The leader point a finger at Newt with harsh eyes. "You're wandering around the maze daydreaming about some damn ghost! You think that's any help?"
"Then why don't you go run the maze instead!?" Newt snapped, voice breaking. "I didn't choose to end up as the one with the fucked up head! Sorry for not being able to control my memories! I'm sorry that you think the amount I run is more important than my own sanity!"
Alby pursed his lips, put his hands on his hips and threw his head back in frustration. He paced around for a few minutes before turning back to Newt with a new round of painful comments. "Get it together. If you can't do this job properly, we'll find a new place for you. I have no problem making Gally my second."
Newt met eyes with the leader. He had confide in Alby before about the things he felt, the reasons he never slept and his fears. Those fears weren't just of the dark or of the grievers. They were of himself and what he was capable of. Right now, it felt like he'd completely forgotten or no longer cared.
"Fine." Newt sneered. He shuttered. Something inside of him had broken.
In that moment, he truly believed he had no future here. There was no way he was made for this routine of running blindly each day with a painful itch in the back of his mind and hollow insides. He had to do something. That was what brought him to the maze and to a high up place.
He thought he found answers. A new reality. In a way, he had. But, he was still stuck in the place he hated the most: the maze. His head was full of those fuzzy memories, now completely clear. He wasn't any more hopeful than before but at least the frustration of trying to unearth those memories was gone.
His body was ruined, though. There was no way he'd ever make it back to the Glade alone. Unless one of his friends found him, this is where he'd die.
For better or worse, he was found. Minho's dark eyes met Newt's from above as an expression crossed his face Newt never hoped to see. In that moment, he knew he should have talked to Minho after his argument with Alby. Minho had always been the better listener and the one to keep him going all this time. He'd betrayed his best friend by leaving without saying goodbye. Though he felt guilt, he was glad Minho was here.
"We're gonna get you back, alright?" Minho swore in a panic, trying to find the best way to pick Newt up. There wasn't even a hint of passing judgement in Minho's voice. All there was to it was concern for his friend and Newt appreciated that. "Besides, we've got one hell of a surprise for you back there. So you've gotta hang on, alright? Promise?"
Newt hung over Minho's shoulder silently. The dark haired runner wobbled as he tried to walk as fast as possible with Newt's body. "I need to hear you say it, man."
Newt tried to swallow but his throat was so dry it only burned. "Promise—" He croaked.
Minho quickened his pace and that was when Newt once again slipped from consciousness.
When Newt woke, the world was spinning but he could manage to make out the faces of his friends. Even Alby was there, arms crossed as he listened to something Jeff was saying. He looked ridden with culpability and apprehension. Newt knew why.
Minho was the first to come closer and gently put a hand on Newt's shoulder. He smiled a little in disbelief. "How you feelin?"
"Like shit," Newt mumbled, moving his head a little. After he'd done it, he regret it instantly. Any movement was agonizing. "What's that bloody surprise you promised?"
"Ah," Minho raised his brows. "The new greenie. She was looking for you when she showed up."
Newt was a little confused but he watched as Minho stepped back from the bed and waved for someone to come join them. At the far end of the room, eyes shyly peeked around the doorway. Fingers gripped the frame tightly and it seemed as if they needed a little more convincing to join the rest of the gladers. Though agonizing, Newt's subconscious told him to lift his head so he could see better.
"Hey, it's okay." Minho coaxed, waving for the greenie to enter more urgently. "He's awake."
The second that face was fully revealed from behind the door and as they came closer, Newt genuinely wasn't sure if he was alive. This was the person he'd been thinking about. They were the one in his memories.
"Y/N?" He spoke as clearly as possible.
The girl stood a little behind Minho, obviously still a little wary. "Yeah." She nod.
Minho eyed the girl and then looked to Newt. "You two wanna tell us what's going on here? Or are we supposed to start guessing?"
Y/N looked up to Minho, eyes never really meeting his. "Memories."
"...So you two knew each other from before the maze?" Alby asked.
"Seems like it." Newt piped up. He felt like a piece of himself had been given back. All of this time, he really had been missing someone.
"Minho too. We knew Minho." Y/N made sure to speak before someone took the conversation some other place. "And there's one more...I don't think he's here."
Newt's eyes went a little wider. He remembered more than he thought. "Thomas? His name is Thomas, right?"
Y/N nod in agreement and then put her hands together nervously. "I don't know what any of it means or why we remember each other."
"Doesn't matter. Some of those memories may help us out later but for now, Newt needs to rest." Alby went to usher everyone out of the room but Y/N and Minho stayed.
"I think we should stay here a while." Y/N motioned to Newt. Alby, for a moment, seemed like he was going to holler commands at Minho and the greenie. That was until he looked at Newt and immediately his demeanour changed. The last time he carelessly forced demands on someone and left their wellbeing aside, Newt ended up alone in the maze. He wasn't doing that again.
Finally, Alby sent a small smile to the three gladers and nod his head in a quiet goodbye.
"Nice. So the three—four—of us were buddies before all of this?" A little smirk crossed his face. Minho couldn't believe he actually had friends. "Thomas is a little late to the party."
"Guess so," Y/N shrugged. "I'm glad you're okay, Newt."
"Thanks to Minho." Newt reached out his hand with a grimace on his face. Minho grabbed it and squeezed gently.
Then, hardly knowing her but knowing they had some kind of past, Minho threw an arm out and pulled Y/N into a suffocating hug. "We're here for you, man. Anything at anytime, alright?"
"Same goes for you two." Newt almost let out a little laugh of relief. He had no idea the world could change so fast. But, from now on out, no matter how bad things got, he'd keep telling himself that. To keep going, one step at a time, because it was impossible to know when things would change for the better.
