Newt lay awake in his room, tossing and turning relentlessly. Ever since he'd met her, there was nothing in the world that could get her off of his mind. Thoughts and images of the girl plagued his mind every hour of the day. Not that he was complaining, but, it did bother him. Despite sitting with her at every meal, walking around the glade on restless nights, or working in the gardens from the break of dawn to sunset, he was nothing more than a friend to her. She was always wrapped up in the moment, thinking about something other than him. He was always an arms length away, no closer.
It was at least 3:00 am now, and knew he wouldn't be sleeping tonight. It was hopeless. Newt's body jerked as he touched his feet to the cold floor, sliding off of the bed. On his way out, he disregarded his shoes, not caring how cold the glade would be.
Ambling in the grass outside of the deadheads, Newt's attention was caught as a clatter came from his left. Unable to pinpoint what the noise was, he looked back to the hammocks across the glade to see if anyone was missing. Surely enough, one hammock was suspended in the air unattended. Y/N's.
Uncontrollably, his heart began to beat a little faster. He could just leave, continue on his way. But what if she was hurt? What if she was being attacked? He had no clue what the noise was. All he knew is that she wasn't asleep like everyone else.
The sudden plague of thoughts made him start off into the woods. He came to the map room and stood for a few moments, trying to steady his pounding heart. No noise seemed to come from within, so he pressed his palm into the door. It let out a low, foreboding moan as it swung open.
Inside, the room was dimly lit with an eery orange glow which came from the one torch which burned inside. The girl was sprawled out on her hands and knees, hyperventilating, hair dishevelled. For a moment, he watched in horror as her chest rose and fell sporadically, clawing her fingers into the floor, trying to grasp reality.
"Y-Y/N?" Newt whispered. No response came. Ever so quickly, he shut the door and ran to her side.
Once there, he knelt down beside her. He could tell she had no idea he was there because her eyes were glued shut, face flushed with a fear that made his heart hurt. To his dismay, his mind was devoid of any idea of how to drag her out of this hell. All he could do was place his hand over hers.
Y/N's eyes shot open with perplexity as she finally took in a sharp breath. For a moment, her Y/E/C eyes darted around the room until they finally locked on his. When they did, Newt was frozen. He'd never felt this before. In her gaze, he was completely immovable, unable to break free for some reason.
"N-Newt?" Y/N managed to force his name out.
Finally breaking from his trance, Newt tightened his grip on her hand.
"Yeah." He took in a deep breath and nodded, turning his eyes away from her shyly.
"What are you doing?" She snapped.
The blonde looked down to his hand in hers and didn't quite know what to say. "I—uh, heard something in here. Thought I'd come check it out."
Y/N looked to him quizzically. Newt could see that the franticness in her eyes had fizzled out and she was returning back to normal, whatever normal was.
"I'm fine." She tried to smile thankfully at him as she attempted to pull her hand out of his. He didn't let it go.
Newt shook his head. "You're not. You get these often, don't you?" He asked.
Y/N just shrugged. "I think we all do here."
She didn't want to lie to him, but telling him the full truth would just worry him. Maybe, even scare him away. She didn't really want him to leave. Newt was her best friend and was always there for her. Sure, she got tired of his despondent ways somedays, but that was just part of who he was.
"C'mon." Newt could feel the floor getting cold on his legs, and he didn't want to stay there much longer. How the girl wasn't shivering already, he had no clue. Gently, he lifted the small girl up off of the floor and into his arms, limping over to the makeshift bed on the floor. He knew she spent a lot of time in here, helping Minho and Thomas every so often, but he never knew she slept in here. The girl just stared at him in disbelief, not sure what to say or do.
Newt sat down in the bed, his back against the wall. He slumped down slightly and let the girl melt into his arms. The room seemed darker now, and for what seemed like the first time, sleep actually began to tug at him.
"Newt, I'm fine. You can go." The girl muttered.
Despite her protests, Newt didn't feel like she wanted him to leave. Her back was against his chest and she held his arms which wrapped around her waist tightly. She was scared.
"I'm not going anywhere." He ran a hand though her Y/H/L soft hair.
"So, wanna tell me what happened now?" He piped up, continuing to brush out her hair with his fingers.
Y/N shifted uncomfortably. "Nightmare, but you already knew that."
"About what exactly though?"
"I don't know... outside of the maze, I guess. The world isn't pretty. So, we all went searching for a safe place. We tried to escape—" The girls voice caught and Newt could swear he felt the chills which ran down her spine against his chest.
"Newt I swear I tried—I did everything I—" Though she tried to force out the words, but it was like they were constrained behind a barrier.
"What happened?" He asked, trying to keep up with brushing away the tears which fell from her eyes.
"I tried so hard to save you. So damn hard." She took in a sharp breath. "But they got you, Newt. Y-You were gone..." The girls body coiled up against him, and he tried to hold back his own tears which formed in unison with the burning feeling in his throat and nose.
"I'm here—it's ok!" He tried to reassure her, but she just kept shaking. "I'm not going anywhere."
Y/N's tears seemed to stop. "You can't promise that. I—It was so real, Newt."
Newt choked up a little. Dreams could do that to a person, make them feel like they'd lived what happened or even seen the future.
"You're right. I can't promise." He wrapped his arms around her again. "But we're going to get out of here and I won't let what you saw happen, love. Trust me."
