Now it's time for me to tell you more of my involvement in this story. Tyler is my best friend. I'm the one who gave him the necklace. Tyler is 2 and a half years older than me. But we've been best friends since we were children. Tyler was a very sweet child, but he was very weak and sickly. Most didn't believe he would make it to adulthood. One year however while he was just 9 years old he was taken away to see a special Doctor. After two years he returned, strong and healthy. But for whatever reason, no one would talk about what happened while he was gone. Especially him. But after years of him not wanting to talk about it... I stopped asking. And honestly I didn't care anymore... I was just happy to have him back. And I was happy he was ok.
5 years ago Tyler started taking trips out of the city quite frequently. This made me worry because the outside world is a very dangerous place. One day on coming back he was badly injured. So I tried to rush him to the hospital. But he begged me not to tell anyone. Instead he went to my home and slept in my basement. He asked me to trust him. So I did. After 6 hours his wounds had started to heal. Not completely, he was in really bad shape. But for only 6 hours he had recovered far faster than normal. He then proceeded to tell me he was a super. I thought it was so amazing that my best friend was a super! But he made me promise never to tell anyone of his secret. I on the other hand made him promise never to do whatever he did to get those wounds ever again. And we both kept our promises... or so we had thought. Many years ago while we were still children we both made a promise never to fight in any wars because we had both lost people to them, and we didn't want to lose each other. 4 years ago I broke that promise and joined the army. Because he always left for months at a time, I used those intervals to train. And before long I was a full on war machine. I was strong, skilled and clever. According to my commanders I was the very best we had. Even though I was only 17. Soon to be 18.
I knew deep down in my heart Tyler was breaking his promise to never do whatever he did that day ever again... but I never called him out on it because I was breaking mine. I gave him that necklace so I would know when he was coming home. But I also gave it to him to know when I would need to stop training and hide my gear so he wouldn't see it. I did this for 4 years. And today is the day that he found out.
The lights on our matching pendants blink faster and faster until they reach a steady glow the closer you get. But I noticed my pendent blinking while we were on our way to the battlefield. I thought it was a malfunction. I thought no way is he here. He'd have no reason to be here. Right? But I couldn't focus on that. I was about to fight in battle. However the fact that it was blinking bothered me. I couldn't help but think "What if he's here? What if he's hurt? Or worse?"
The squadron I lead along with two others was heading into battle. We were confident. But this was a fight we wouldn't win. Our Intel was bad. We went in expecting far less resistance. We were heavily outgunned and heavily outnumbered. We had a number of small mechs in each squadron, as well as foot soldiers and a few tanks. We also had one large mech for each squadron. But even that wasn't enough. They had all of what we had and more. They even had special soldiers with suits made for fighting against supers. We didn't even have any supers in our land. Other than Tyler of course. But no one knew he was a super. People had suspicions however, and many treated him differently because of those suspicions. The people in our land were never very tolerant of his kind. Most of them quite religious. And many of them were stuck in their ways. They had some pretty strong views about supers.
But I loved my super bestfriend. And I'd never let anything come between us. And little did I know he was coming to save me.
