TVD: S3E55 - Our Town

(October 10th) Alexis' POV

It's Caroline's eighteenth birthday and four weeks before my due date. "Remind me again why I'm here?" I ask Elena. As I rub my back. I'm having trouble sleeping and have to pee nearly every ten minutes. My back hurts and my ankles are swollen.

"Because Caroline is your best friend" she tells me as Bonnie arrives.

"Hey, sorry I'm late, I...I got held up" she tells us.

"It's okay. We just got here too" I assure her.

"Can you pass me the balloons? Thanks" Elena says as I hand them to her. "What got you running late?" she asks Bonnie.

"I was...working on some new spells. You?" she asks.

"Working out with Alaric" Elena tells her.

"I had to remind her what day it was and now I'm regretting it" I tell her as I lean against the wall.

"So, I have something I need to tell you both, and you're not gonna like it" Elena tells us. I frown in confusion. What's she talking about?

"What happened?" Bonnie asks her concerned.

"Jeremy is gonna be leaving town for a while. He'll be staying with some old family friends in Denver, until this whole Klaus thing blows over" Elena explains.

"Jeremy wouldn't leave us to deal with Klaus alone or risk missing the birth of his niece" I state.

"I know...I asked Damon to compel him" she tells us.

"You what?" we demand.

"I know Lexis, Bonnie. But it's not safe for him here anymore. Leaving will give him a better life. It'd be better for you to Lexis, but you won't leave. The only reason I'm telling you both is because I know that Bonnie and him haven't really worked out their stuff. And I thought that maybe you'd wanna say goodbye" she explains.

I leave them and go over to Jeremy. "Elena told me about Denver" I say.

"Yeah, I think this could be a good thing. Until all this Klaus stuff blows over. I think I could have a better life there. Want to come with me?" he asks me.

"Jeremy, I can't travel that far in my condition" I tell him. "Please promise to be back in time for Adrianna's birth" I plead.

"I wouldn't miss that for the world" he tells me smiling. He kisses my forehead. "When are you due again?" he asks me.

"November 14th" I remind him. "Please call often" I tell him. He agrees and goes to class.

(Caroline's house)

Caroline didn't turn up at school so we decide to surprise her at her house. We hid waiting for her to return home. She walks into her house and puts her stuff down. We jump out of hiding yelling "Surprise!".

"Happy Birthday" Matt and I say as he places a crown on her head.

"What are you guys doing here?" Care asks us.

"Well you blew off school and missed our work of birthday art, so..." Elena starts.

"Change into warmer clothes, we are going to the Falls. S'mores, camp fire..." Bonnie continues.

"Cake! Like when we were little" I tell her smiling.

"Except for tequila" Matt adds and we all chuckle.

"Thanks, guys. Really, um, I'm just not feeling my birthday this year" Care tells us and we look at her shocked.

"I'm sorry, what?" Bonnie asks her.

"You've already claimed your birthday as everyone's favorite day of the year" I remind her.

"Yeah, and now, it's just a reminder that technically, I'm dead. Look, I didn't even like 17. And the only point to being 17 is to get to 18. It's a filler year; I'm stuck in a filler year" Care explains.

"You're not stuck, Caroline" I assure her.

"Yeah I am, but it's okay. You know, it's all good, I'll be fine. But I just need some time to wallow in it" she explains.

"Okay, well I think I have another idea" Elena tells us. We go to the Fell tomb. "Caroline was right...technically, she's dead. Sorry. But you don't need a birthday, you need a funeral. You need to say goodbye to your old life, so that you can move on with your new one" she explains.

"Okay. Here lies Caroline Forbes" Care says smiling.

"Cheerleader, Miss Mystic Falls, third grade hopscotch champion" I start.

"Friend, daughter, overachiever" Bonnie continues.

"Mean girl, sometimes, no offense" Matt adds.

"Ah, none taken" she assures him.

"She was 17, and she had a really good life. So rest in peace, so that she can move forward" Elena explains. She approaches Care with the cake.

"That's what you really need. What we all really need. Amen, or cheers or whatever. Bonnie?" I ask and she lights the candles. "Nice! Okay, make a wish" I tell Care as Elena holds the cake out to her. Care closes her eyes making a wish and blows out the candles.

Matt cuts the cake and we all sit around as we eat it. . Matt takes the bottle of tequila from Bonnie, but Elena snatches it from his hand and drinks.  "Ah-ah. I need it more than you do, trust me. Caroline, what are you doing?" Elena asks her. I notice Caroline is texting someone.

"What? Nothing" Care says trying to hide her phone.

"Okay, you're a bad sober liar. You're an even worse drunk liar" I tell her and take a sip of my water.

"I might have texted Tyler" she says and I give her a look along with Elena. "What? I'm delicate" she tells us.

"Give her a break! You can't control what everyone does all the time" Bonnie tells Elena. And there's an awkward silence. "Sorry, I know it's Caroline birthday, funeral or whatever but, I just feel it's really wrong that you compelled Jeremy to leave town" she states.

"I'm doing it to protect him, Bonnie. I want to give him a chance to have a quiet normal life" Elena tells her.

"You think I don't want that too Elena? I do want that. For all of us, not just Jeremy" I tell her.

"He should be able to choose how he wants to live it like Alexis. And you're taking his choices away" Bonnie adds.

"Bonnie, you can't tell him" Elena tells her.

"Why? Are you gonna compel me not to?" Bonnie asks her.

"You know, you guys are ruining a perfect funeral" Matt tells us.

"I'm sorry. I'm just gonna go sleep it off or something. Happy birthday" Bonnie tells Caroline.

"Me too, my feet and back are killing me. Happy Birthday Care, see you all later" I say and leave with Bonnie. She drops me off before going home herself.

(Next morning)

Jeremy is leaving today and I'm hugging him goodbye. "You're gonna have to let me go, eventually" he tells me. I sigh and let him go.

"Be safe, ok" I tell him.

"Yeah, okay, all right. Alaric's waiting" he tells me as Bonnie arrives. "What are you doing here?" he asks her confused.

"I came to say goodbye" Bonnie tells him and they hug. Jeremy then grabs his stuff, looks at us one last time and goes to the car. He gets in and Alaric drives away. Bonnie takes me back to my apartment, leaving Elena alone.
