They sat on the bench, side by side,

Her eyes were closed, his stayed open wide,

Their closeness a lifelong harmony implied,

None knew of the strife the peace did hide.

She thought of the distant past,

When life had been a struggle vast,

Days were long yet, time flew fast,

Not a single dream of hers did last.

How young and naïve she had been,

What hopeful dreams she had seen,

But destiny, cruelly did intervene,

And she was married off at sixteen.

She resented him, her senior by eight years,

A man bewildered by her frequent tears,

A serious man, who scoffed at her fears,

And she felt her words meet deaf years.

Then time passed, their kids were born,

Bundles of joy, for her days forlorn,

In their giggles, she forgot to mourn,

And new hopes her life did adorn.

Acceptance of life bestowed calm,

Of resentment she held no qualm,

New opportunities, a soothing balm,

Learnt that fate is not lines on her palm.

Eyes open, yet unfocussed was his sight,

Life was lovely and days were bright,

So different from those years of plight,

When life was bleaker than darkest night.

At twenty four, he had a dreams few,

Forced to marry a girl he barely knew,

Life was a struggle, the relationship new,

And was rattled by the tantrums she threw.

He hated that she felt she didn't belong,

But, what he did or said, it was always wrong,

When he was firm, he was called headstrong,

If compliant, he was just drifting along.

As time passed, he accepted the daily strife,

Yet determined to give a comfortable life,

Mother of his children, his wonderful wife,

With laughter and wealth, his home was rife.

Old age came, the children were grown,

Youth giving way to many a weary bone,

With only them, empty seemed the home,

Yet, together, they did not feel alone.

In silent resignation they had wed,

In silent acceptance, life they led,

With caution, around each other they tread,

Till their bitterness, time did shred.

Overruling objections of the mind,

Affection gently given, returned in kind,

And slowly, surely, a way love did find,

As heart to heart , firmly, it did bind.
