The Reminisce

Do you remember wife, mi esposa

The day we embarked over unruly terrain

To leave behind a life of poverty

Our language, our cherished culture

Searching for gilded land

Or how it came to be

You and me in a broke down shack

Nestled on borrowed blankets

With a few clattering coins

We clung tightly in our hands

Oh, those are years to not forget

My fingers blistered after picking cotton

Your feet swollen after diner days

And little food inside our bellies

In order to build our future home

Then love poured out into daughters

Dear and sweet like nectar

Living with their brown skin

In a world of differences

They felt were not their Spanish own

But time went on for growing ladies

Marriages and little feet once more

That brought with it some change

Of brighter days and living well

Inside the walls we built on dreams

Until I left you all alone

Waiting on this bench with dried up tears

Watching for the time to come

When you would cross into my terrain

To sit with me and reminisce right here.
