Years Past And The Years Beyond
Each standing among a sea of faces
After years of roaming these worn
Corridors and hidden places. The
Pockets of lingering corners and
Empty class-rooms, avoiding being
Swept up by the crowds and janitor's
Brooms. An endless battle of wits,
Skimming bodies and embracing
Fear, passing by the rounder's field
In the clear. Dance another class of
Mortal peril, just like cooking and
Sewing, standing on display for a
Shy showing. The battle lines
Were fierce, the months were drawn
And served in seasons, detention a
Courtly mock trial for attempting
To rewrite the rules, against all reason.
Bleak days falling in ever unruly hours,
Rainfall kissing the parched garden
Flowers, a moment of hope-filled
Dreams to remind us of our light, still
In flourishing but darkening sight. An
Education of wise words, branching
Out into fanning trees of knowledge,
Pearls of wisdom draping willowing
Leaves to adorn the résumé of our
Bejewelled college. Arising from the
Night of misunderstanding and into
The day of illumination, we grasp our
Sterling stars of hard won graduation,
Looking to one another in silver lined
Inspiration. Under the watchful eyes
Of our modern day centurions, where
We have battled torrid trials of class
Affairs to emerge with our hearts own
Striking valedictorian flair; harnessing
A steel resolve, our footprints left in
The sand, we walk on with the spirit
Of a wild stallion and of a peaceful
Mare, our historied experience
Beyond compare. To open the door
Into the cold, to the rest of our story
Kindling and unforetold.
