(Derek POV)

I awoke to blaring alarms in the room. I looked around and saw the code team coming in with a cart of supplies. "Derek, get up!" Bailey yelled. I scurried out of the bed and looked around. Meredith was coding. "Okay, we need to intubate stat! Get me a 6.0 ET tube!" Bailey yelled. I watched the whole scene unfold. A nurse handed her the tube and she carefully guided it down her airway and hooked her up to a ventilator. "What the hell happened?" I asked as the code team left the room. "Looks like both lungs collapsed. We're lucky she didn't code." Bailey explained. I looked at her in shock. "She will probably wake up in a few hours." She added. I nodded. After a few hours, I felt her hand move slightly under my hand.

(Cristina POV)

After I lost my 13th covid patient in the last month, I decided to see Meredith. I walked into her room and immediately noticed that she was intubated and unconscious. "What happened?" I asked Derek, who was sitting next to Mer. "Both of her lungs collapsed. They intubated her and reinflated them." He explained. "Crap." I said. "Is she in a coma yet?" I asked, knowing that most patients with covid go into comas before dying. "No. Bailey said she should be awake in a few hours." He said. "Thank god." I said. "Oh!" Derek exclaimed. "What?" I questioned. "She's waking up. Bailey said a few hours, but I guess Mer didn't need that much time." He said. "You got it Mer. Take your time." He whispered into her ear. After a few minutes, Meredith slowly opened those big green eyes. "Welcome back." We said in unison. Meredith blinked a few times, but she wasn't fighting the vent. Derek and I both shared a look of fear.

(Bailey POV)

I ran to Merediths room when Derek paged me. I jogged into the room and saw Derek and Cristina talking quietly to an awake Meredith. "Grey. Nice to see you concious again." I joked. I immediately noticed that she wasn't fighting the vent, which is a bad sign. "I see your not breathing on your on Grey. What's going on there?" I asked, obviously not expecting an answer. I walked over to her and took my stethoscope out. I quietly listened to her breath sounds. "So, it seems as if both lungs have reinflated, but there is 100% fluid in there which is probably causing you to not be able to breathe on your own. We need to remove that as soon as possible." I explained. They both nodded, Meredith nodding as well as she could with the vent. "I'll get the supplies and I'll be back." I said as I walked out of the room.

(Meredith POV)

What's in my mouth? Why is it in my mouth? What's going on? Oh. Crap. I must be intubated. "You got it Mer. Take your time." I heard a voice whisper. I slowly opened my eyes to see derek and cristinas worried looks.

After Bailey leaves, I look over at Derek who just smiles a sad smile. I reach over and grab his hand and squeeze it tightly. He does the same with mine. Beep beep beep! "Crap, I gotta go." Cristina said. "Good luck Mer." She said as she hurried out. Bailey walked in with the supplies. "Okay Grey, this is gonna hurt I'm not gonna lie to you. Do you want a sedative or just a painkiller? Squeeze my hand once for the sedative and twice for the painkiller." Bailey said. I don't want to be foggy, so I squeezed baileys hand twice. "Are you sure?" Derek asked. I squeezed his hands twice. "Okay Grey." Bailey said as she administered the drugs through my iv. She picked up the needle. "Ready? 1, 2, 3." She said as she stuck the needle into my chest. I winced in pain at the sharp needle being stuck into my chest. "Breathe Mer, your okay." Derek said. I squirmed in discomfort. "Almost done Grey, your doing good." Bailey said. A minute or two later, she finally pulled the needle out.

(Derek POV)

Bailey stuck the needle in and it obviously hurt. Meredith was squirming around in pain and I couldn't stand it. I hate seeing her in pain. It pains me to see her in pain. "Breathe Mer, your okay." I said, hoping to try to relieve some of her pain. When Bailey pulled out the needle, Meredith had clear tears streaming down her face. "I know, your okay." I murmered. "Okay Grey. We got most of the fluid out, the rest should resolve on its own. Take it easy, and keep either the nasal cannula on or the oxygen mask, okay?" Bailey asked. Meredith nodded, and I did the same. Bailey left the room, leaving just me and Meredith. She looked over at me. "It's hurts Der." She said quietly. My heart broke into pieces again. "I know Mer. I know it does, but once your better, you me and the kids are all gonna have a movie marathon and we're gonna cuddle on the couch and eat a lot of junk food, okay? It's gonna okay. I'm here." I said. She nodded. "I-." I started before my pager went off. "Damnit. Mer, I have to go for a while, but I'll be back I promise. I love you so much." I said regretfully. "I love you too." She croaked through the oxygen mask. And with that, I left the room.
