(Meredith POV)
I'm bored. So bored. I really want to go home and see my kids. My chest doesn't really hurt anymore but Bailey still said another week at least.
"Good morning sleepyhead." Derek said, kissing me softly. "Morning." I replied with a smile. "How are you feeling?" He asked.
"Good. I'm bored." I pouted. Derek smiled. "I'll bring you some charts later and we can fall the kids." Derek promised. "Okay."
"Grey." Bailey said, coming into the room. "Hi dr Bailey." I said grinning. "What's with that smile?" She asked. "Just happy." I replied.
"Well, today we're gonna get you up and standing. Maybe walking, depending on if you can handle it." Bailey said.
"I can handle it." I said confidently. "Grey, you have stood up in weeks, let alone walk. Your muscles are going to need to get used to it again, so it's okay if you can't today." Bailey said.
I sighed. "Okay." I replied. "Do you want to wait a little while or get it over with now?" She asked. I looked at Derek. "Get it over with now." I answered.
Derek nodded and came to my side of the bed. "Okay. You know the drill, just slowly throw your legs over the side of the bed and ease yourself up. Derek and I will help you." Bailey instructed.
I took a deep breath before doing so and swung my legs over the side. That feels weird. Kind of hurts too.
"Good. Take it easy and go slow. Try to ease yourself up. It's going to feel weird, and maybe hurt." Bailey warned. I used my arms to push myself up and my feet touched the ground.
I stood up shakily and felt dereks arm grasp onto my waist, Baileys as well. I felt my breathing quicken as I just stood. I was standing, yet it felt like I weighed 400 pounds.
"You're doing good Grey. Are you feeling okay?" Bailey asked. "Did I gain 200 pounds?" I asked, breathing deeply. Bailey chuckled, but Derek frowned. "If anything, you lost weight. You gotta get that back up." Derek said.
"I didn't lose any weight." I argued. I was always smaller than others, but never too bad. "You did Grey. He's right, you do need to get that up." Bailey cut in. I rolled my eyes but nodded.
A minute later, I felt my legs get shaky. "Okay, that's enough for today." Bailey said. Derek lifted me back into bed and pulled the covers over me.
Weirdly, I was exhausted. I had stood up for 5 minutes, and I felt like I was going to pass out any minute. "Go to sleep Mer." Derek whispered, kissing my forehead. I nodded and closed my eyes.
(Derek POV)
Meredith was out in minutes. "She did good. Standing after not standing for weeks does that to a person recovering from covid and a heart transplant." Bailey said.
"I know. I'm not worried- well, I am, but thats not gonna change. I'm just concerned for what she'll do when she gets bored enough. Meredith doesn't like being told what to do, if you haven't noticed." I said.
"Oh, she'll listen to me. I have eyes on her everywhere." Bailey said sternly. "I promised I'd bring her charts to keep her occupied." I said.
"Woman can't take a break." She muttered. "That's fine. As long as she's taking care of herself and not overdoing anything it's fine."
Bailey left and I was left alone with Mer. She was doing well. I didn't have to worry much anymore. She was sleeping, and she was recovering. Everything is okay now.
•••(Carolyn POV)
When my girls went home, it was just me and the kids again. I love watching my grandkids, especially my sons. I haven't be able to spend time with them as much as my others.
Bailey asks me every 10 minutes when mama is coming home. I don't know what to say to him so I just tell him 'soon'.
Bailey is a complete mamas boy, clearly. He looks just like Meredith, too. Zola, on the other hand, is a complete daddy's girl. And then theirs Ellis. She's a mommy and a daddy's girl. But she looks like Meredith.
Meredith is a brilliant young woman. I wouldn't want my son having babies or being married to anyone else. I knew Addie wasn't right for him.
My son made himself a gorgeous family. Derek is just like michael. Protective, generous, and giving. I know my husband is proud of him in heaven.
"Nana?" Zola asked, pulling me out of my thoughts. "Yes dear?" I replied. "When's mom coming home? Dad said she was doing better." Zola questioned. I couldn't lie to the girl. She's too smart.
"I think he said that your mom was feeling better and she's doing well, but her body still needs to recover. You know when you wake up after playing all day and sometimes your sore?" I asked.
She nodded. "Well, moms been laying down for a while now, and she's still sore, so she needs to get back on her feet." I explained. "Ohhhh." Zola breathed.
"Nana?" Bailey asked. "Yes Bailey?"
"Can I tell you a secret?" He asked. I nodded. "I like your cooking a lot better than mamas. She can't cook." Bailey whispered. I chuckled and smiled. "I'll teach her how to cook when she comes home, how does that sound?" I asked.
Bailey smiled and hugged me. Spending time with my grand babies is one of the best things I could be doing.
