They were days away from the first challenge and everyone could feel the energy changing in the air. The first task was supposed to test your courage so none of the champions were told what to expect, however Harry somehow found out that the first task was dragons and informed Cedric the next day. The Daily Prophet had come and interviewed the four champions but when the article came out there was no mention of Cedric at all. Harry Potter was the top news story, and it seemed to bother Harry more than anyone else. Addie was less concerned with the task as she was about not seeing Fred since the party.
"I don't know Ruby? I haven't seen him in about 3 weeks. He hasn't shown up for class and I haven't seen him walking around either?" The girls walked down the corridor to the library to research topics for their potions essay. Addie was starting to worry that what Fred saw at the party was the reason for his disappearance.
"I know he's going to his other classes because I asked Cedric and he said that Fred was still showing up for their Arithmancy class. So he's just avoiding the class I'm in, and George still goes but I don't want to ask him and give him the wrong idea." Addie sighed as she picked up a potions book from the shelf. "Look, I feel like I should find him and ask him why he isn't going to class? Right? I'll just say Professor Trelawney made me look for him. I mean if he doesn't show up he's going to fail and then he'll have to take it again next year." Ruby shook her head in agreement, but her face showed doubt. "It's the perfect plan. All I have to do is find him."
Classes ended and found herself fast waking to the girls bathroom. She decided that the one person who she could convince to tell her where Fred was, was Hermione Granger. She thought that if she could convince Hermione that if was for class purposes Hermione would cave. She walked into the girls bathroom and saw Granger washing her hands at the farthest sink. "Hey Hermione! Just the person I was looking for!" Hermione smiled back at Addie and walked over to dry her hands. "So Hermione, I just have a quick question. Do you know where I could find Fred?" She smiled at her trying not to look suspicious. "You see he's missed 3 weeks of Divination and he's going to fail if he doesn't come back." Hermione gave Addie a puzzling look, "Uh Professor Trelawney sent me!" She snapped trying to sound convincing enough for the frizzy haired girl to give away Fred's location. Hermione laughed at her sad attempt, "Look. I'm going to tell you where Fred is, purely because I like you and not because you're worried about his grades" Addies face fell as Hermione continued to laugh about the situation. "He's honestly either in our Common Room or the Astronomy Tower, he's been spending a lot of time up there lately. If he's not in the tower find me or Ron and we'll take you to our common room." Addie hugged Hermione and turned to leave the bathroom at a quick pace.
Addie ran to the Astronomy Tower and climbed up the stairs to the top. When she finally reached the top of the tower she was out of breath, panting from basically sprinting to get there. When she caught her breath she slowly crept around the corner to see a tall, red haired boy looking over the balcony. "You know, if you were trying to sneak up on me you should have just walked up the stairs. I could hear you breathing 5 minutes back." Fred turned to look at Addies bright red face, he let out a small chuckle before turning around looking back at the view. Addie walked over and stood right next to him. They didn't look or speak to each other for at least 5 minutes.
"Uh well, Professor Trelawney wanted me to let you know that if you don't come back to class she's going to fail you." Addie lied.
"Did she? That's interesting because I talked to her weeks ago and told her what's going on and she lets me come and do the lesson at the end of the day." Addies face turned bright red with embarrassment.
"So why don't you tell me what's going on then? Why are you lying to me again?" Addie felt her heart race as he called her out."Well honestly I just wanted to know why you weren't showing up to class. And if you talked to Trelawney, what's the reason your not coming? What situation?" Addie turned to look at Fred who was running his fingers through his hair, he paused for a moment before grabbing the railing and pushing himself back. "You want the truth Addie? You want to know why I'm not coming to class?" He snapped. Addie shook her head yes as she looked deeply into his eyes. "I'm not coming to class because I can't stand to be in the same room with you anymore." Addies mouth dropped. "I'm not coming to class because every time I see you all I can picture in my head is you grinding up against Diggory." Addie started to back up as Fred inched closer, his hand still holding firmly onto the railing next to him. "Addie, I'm not coming to class because you lied to me for months about your secret relationship, who you're now in a very, very open relationship with. It's all making me go crazy." Addie stopped moving but Fred grew closer. "Adelaide, I stopped showing up for classes because I am in love with you. I have been for years now, and I just can't stand to see you with someone else" Addies back was pushed up against a wall as Fred cornered her there, he held her there for a couple more seconds before dropping his arms and backing up giving her space to breathe. Addie let out a loud sigh before gaining her composure. He was leaning against the railing so casually like he hadn't just told her he loved her. She felt a knot form in her stomach which quickly grew into anger.
"Why would you tell me that? What do you want me to say Fred? I'm with Cedric!" Fred rolled his eyes at the mention of his name. "You're the one that told me you wanted to be with me and when I said that I wanted to be with you too, you shut me down. You made a HUGE fucking deal about Cedric and I kissing last year, that it ruined the fact that you wanted to date me. YOU called me a whore on the staircase because I told Roger Davies I would tutor him. YOU fought Cedric and YOU yelled at me for having Cedrics initials on my wrist. And now YOU want to casually tell me that you love and and that you have loved me?!" Fred was taken back at Addies response, he thought that if he told her he loved her they could fix everything. But it only made things worse.
"Fred. I just can't handle this back and forth with you, it's so chaotic. First you love me, then you hate me, then you rake up leaf piles to show me you remembered my favorite thing about fall, then you don't show up to classes for three weeks because you can't stand to see me, and now you love me? How am I supposed to know what's real?" Addie eyes started to well up and tear rolled down her cheeks.
Fred grabbed ahold of Addies arms and leaned down to be at her eye level, "Addie I have been your best friend since your first year here at Hogwarts, I haven't left your side. Can't you see that Cedric has tore us apart? He's jealous that I was close to you. Can't you see that he's dating you to mess with me?" Addies eyes snapped forward filled with rage.
"Excuse you? You think that Cedric is dating me to get back at you? For what? What have you done to Cedric that would warrant him to spite date me? Hmm? How ignorant do you have to be to think that my dating life revolves around you Fred."
"I told you, Cedric didn't like that you and I were close when you started hooking up, he was jealous of the fact that even though you were making out with him, you still spent the night with me every night, even though we were just friends! He doesn't want me in your life and it's very obvious. We were best friends Ads and now we're basically nothing."
Addie face dropped when Fred said this, but it quickly changed when she remembered why all of this started. "Fred. I'm going to say this one more time. YOU got mad at me first. I wanted to date you. If you would have asked me to be your girlfriend that night I would have one hundred percent said yes, and none of this would have ever happened. We could be happy and dating, but you let your ego get in the way. So here we are. Your right. We're basically nothing." Addie turned to leave but Fred stopped her before she walked down the stairs.
"Fine, we're nothing. But I'm not going to stop until we're something. You're supposed to be with me, not Diggory. I made a mistake and I'm sorry for that. But we should be together and you know that."
Addie pushed past him and walked down the stairs and headed to the court yard to find Cedric. Fred's words rang in her ears as the day went forward.
"You're supposed to be with me, not Diggory."
