It was now the middle of December and the castle grounds were covered in a fresh coat of snow. Addie had broken up with Cedric the day after the first task took place and the whole school was buzzing on about it. Rumors flew around as no one could confirm why they really broke up in the first place and Addie wasn't confirming or denying any story when they asked."I heard that she broke up with him because he didn't win the first task."
"I heard that she broke up with him because Fred Weasley was better in bed."
"I heard that she wouldn't sleep with him so he dumped her."
She couldn't help but laugh when a new rumor would circle around because the more there were, the farther from the truth they got. She would never dump anyone if they didn't win a match or in this case a Triwizard Trial, she had never slept with Fred and she wasn't a cheater, and she definitely did sleep with Cedric, but no one needed to know that. She had seen Cedric a couple times after the breakup and to her surprise it wasn't as awkward as she though it was going to be. Every time he would see her he would give her a small wave and a half smile but then he would focus his attention back on whatever he was working on. She felt better knowing that he didn't hate her even though they weren't together anymore.
The mood at Hogwarts changed when the news that the Yule Ball was taking place on Christmas was announced. A lot of the students had already asked their partners or friends to the dance and panic had set in when the pool of available people were slim to none. Addie decided early on that she didn't want to go to the Ball especially after her break up with Cedric. Her mother had sent her a soft apple green tulle ball gown with soft gold floral embellishments on the side, it was absolutely breathtaking. She has planned on wearing it when she was with Cedric but now it didn't feel right going without him. All of the Triwizard Champions were required to have dates and every girl in Hogwarts was hopping they were lucky enough to be asked by the freshly single Cedric. There had been no news as to who he asked yet, but whoever they were, had to have felt lucky.
Fred had been hanging around Addie more and things kind of felt like they were back to normal. She had sat next to him in the Gryffindor Common room, after he sneaked her in of course, watching him and his twin write a letter. They had asked Ron to borrow his owl but he shot them down saying no. "You can borrow my owl Fred" Addie said grabbing the enclosed letter off the table. He quickly snatched it out of her hand and put it in his pocket. "Great! Ill go with you to the owlery later tonight then." He gave her a big smile before turning his head over to Ron and Harry, "You boys have dates to the Ball yet?" Both boys shook their head in defeat. "Who are you going with Fred? Asked Ron in a mocking tone. "Oh, I've asked Angelina to go with me" he said casually looking at Addie to see if she had a sour reaction to the news. Addie didn't take offence to him not asking her to go, they had just started to become friends again and Angelina was a beautiful girl, he was lucky that she had agreed to go with him. They sat and talked in the common room for a while longer and Ron was starting to sweat at the thought of not finding a date. Addie was getting tired of his constant slander towards the girls at Hogwarts that it actually made her mad when he spoke.
"Ron, you know I love you dear, but maybe if you weren't such a shallow and judgmental asshole, you would have an easier time finding a date." Ron looked at her in disbelief, confused as to what exactly he said that made her mad. Hermione leaned over the table to give her a sly high-five before retreating back to her book. Addie gave the group a nod, lifting her feet off the arm rest of Fred's chair and swept off to the hole in the wall behind the painting. All the talk about the Yule Ball was starting to annoy her so she didn't want to be there anymore. Fred whacked Ron in the back of the head with a newspaper for making Addie leave. He got up from his seat and climbed in the hole to try an catch up with her before she made it to her room. "Addie!" he called out hoping she would stop so he could catch up to her but he never did. "Fuck Addie, did you army crawl through the passageway as fast as you could?" he laughed as he opened the passageway door to her room. When he finally looked up from wiping the dust off his jeans he saw her dress hanging from one of the posts on her bed. He walked over to the dress and ran his hand over the fabric, grabbing the side and fluffing it out to see the whole thing.
"Hey, did someone ask you to the Ball?" Addie glanced at him before turning back to what she was looking at. "No Fred, no one has asked me and frankly I don't really want to go, my mom sent me the dress when I was still dating Cedric, and it doesn't fit in my closet so I just have it hanging there." He paused before responding, carefully choosing his words, "Are you mad that I didn't ask you and I asked Angelina to the Ball?" She set the box she was holding down and turned to face him, "No Freddie, please, why would I be mad at you for asking her? I like Angelina, I think she's a really great friend to you and we've only just started to become friends again." She was cut off from talking when he reached out and grabbed her hand. "Are you sure?" Addie pulled her hand out from his, "Yes Fred, I'm sure. I also just don't really want to see Cedric dancing with someone else, so I'm just going to stay up here."
He could see the sadness in her eyes when she said Cedric's name. He was her first boyfriend, her first everything, and Fred felt all the blame when it came to the reason they broke up in the first place. He didn't feel bad about them breaking up, he was actually happy about it, he felt bad that Addie hadn't been her self since. Fred also knew that he had told her his feelings towards her but they still hadn't talked about it. Everything was very much in the air and both of them felt like they were walking on egg shells trying not to piss the other one off. Addie spent a lot of time up in her room except when she was going to classes or tutoring students in Divinations. Every once in a while Fred and George could convince her to come hang out with them in their common room, but it was never for long, she always left early.
Fred looked at his watch and saw that it was almost eight o'clock, so he hugged Addie goodbye and left her room, leaving her by herself. Ruby and Frankie were starting to worry about her so they called a meeting in the library with everyone that was close to her, to try an come up with a way to make her feel better. When Fred arrived he was the last one to show up, when he looked to see who was all there he saw a tall brunette sitting amongst them. He walked closer to where they were sitting and stopped when he got to George. "Why the Hell is Diggory here?" he snapped looking to Ruby and Frankie, as they clearly were the ones who invited him. "Fred calm down, I wanted everyone here so that's why he's here."
"I still love Addie, she broke up with me because of you, so I really should be asking why you're here Weasley." said Cedric, his eyes flashed red with hate.
"Will you both shut up!" snapped Charlie, tired of the two boys hurting his older sister.
"You're both the reason she's up in her room crying every night." sighed Jude in agreement with his twin. The rest of the group looked in astonishment to the two youngest boys, they were usually so quiet, afraid to speak up because they were surrounded by such outgoing people all the time.
"Your not the ideal knight in shining armor Fred, you hurt her first and you did it in front of the whole school, might I add." hissed Cedric. Fred almost lunged at Cedric from across the table after he said that. "Hey! I didn't want to break up with her! I just wanted her to get rid of the ginger!" he shouted backing up to get out of Fred's reach.
"You should have let that dragon kill you! Because when I'm done with you, you're going to wish it had!" before anyone could stop him, Fred jumped across the table and swung his arm at Cedric's face, but he barely got a hit in because the twins grabbed him around his waist, trying to hold him back. "Help us!" they screamed, the two youngest boys were being dragged around by Fred angrily chasing Cedric out of the library.
"Maybe if I asked her back out she'd be happier! Because you guys are doing such a bang up job here!" yelled Cedric as he left the library, leaving the rest of the group to try and figure out how to better the situation.
"Way to go Fred! Now he's not going to help us!" growled Frankie. "We don't need his damn help! And frankly I'm quite pissed you thought we did." he snapped back trying to catch his breath after carrying the twins around his waist in a full sprint.
"Damnit Fred! Lose the ego, this isn't about your issues with Diggory okay? Now were going to have him working against us instead of with us." Fred looked at Frankie and shrugged his shoulders before taking a seat next to Scotty at the table. The group finally calmed down after Fred's outburst toward Cedric. They all threw out ideas on what they could do to help Addie feel better and snap her out of what she was going through. An hour had passed before Fred chimed in, "So I have a really good idea and I thought of it earlier when I was with her, but I'm going to need all your help for it to work." Fred went into vivid detail about what he wanted to do for Addie and each of the tasks that each person was going to be assigned to so that it went off without a hitch. They all agreed on Fred's plan and right away started on their part to help Fred win over Addie.
