Marcel was inconsolable, to say the least. He couldn't even bring himself to come out of his room in the compound in the days after Davina's loss. He'd begged Nik and Isa to take over the duties of New Orleans for a few days, he just needed time. And how could they say no to their grieving son?
So, after Marcel made a brief appearance to make the announcement of the temporary change in leadership to his followers, Nik took the lead. He fell into his old role quite easily as he dealt with the physical duties of the city and the responsibilities that required the physical presence of the leader of New Orleans, while Isa was to remain within the compound to deal with matters that didn't require physical presence, such as corresponding with the human faction about the dock trade and tourist numbers. She was also charged with taking care of Marcel who seemed to not even want Rebekah's company, but he couldn't say no to his mother.
Though, as Nik went about his business, he grew more concerned for the safety of his family after the events of the Harvest. 4 witches died and 4 were supposed to rise, so where did all that power go? Someone had obviously stolen it, the family deducing that they'd likely used it to resurrect others, but the questions were, who stole it? And who did they resurrect?
"Isa?" asked Thierry as he approached the pregnant vampire who had been mindlessly binge-eating beignets as she read through several documents.
"What is it, Thierry?" she asked as she snapped out of it and wiped her mouth.
"I've found something down at the docks, I think you need to see it," he said as he adjusted his hat."Unfortunately, my lovely husband has forbade me from leaving the compound. And where I would usually fight him on the matter, I am too tired to do so for obvious reasons, so you'll have to settle for my proxy," she said before calling out for her sister.
After they had left, Nik, Elijah, and Diego returned hauling two dead bodies with them. Isa stood but froze when she saw the symbol etched on their foreheads, the symbol that killed them and gave the power of their immortal life force over to the witch who carved the symbol. "Nik, please, please tell me that, that is not what I think it is?" she asked on shaky feet as one hand cradled her bump and the other pointed at the foreheads of the dead vampires.
"I'm afraid that it is, my love. But not to worry, someone will die for this."
"Remarkably, I don't disagree," Elijah mused as he ran a finger over the mark. "I would like to know where they learned such dark magic. I had hoped never to see that symbol again," he said as he stood.
"You and me both, Elijah," Isa muttered.
"Obviously this is some copycat witch trying to stand against us as the original did. And I shall do to them what I did to him," Nik said as he moved towards Diego and began giving instructions and reassuring him and the other vampires that they would get the witches back under control, while Isa clutched onto Elijah's arm.
"Elijah, it's not a copycat," she whispered to him and he turned, their shoulders touching as he turned his head to speak to her.
"Explain."
"Remember what Rebekah said? 4 died, 4 should rise. No one rose. And there is no living person who knows this type of magic. We made sure of it."
"Are you suggesting that -"
"You know exactly what I'm suggesting," she cut him off. "I know we do not have sufficient evidence to support my theory, but just, be careful. Please. We never did figure out why Davina drew Celeste either," she begged, and Elijah pressed a kiss to her cheek.
"We will be cautious. On that you have my word, sister," he said, and he moved away and Nik came over to kiss her goodbye, they were going out again to find a witch who knows witches. The witch being Sophie Deveraux.
