WILL POV:
I threw my backpack down on the coach as we walked into Nicos living room. I saw his half sister Hazel in the kitchen making a salad that honestly looked really good.
"Hey!" she said when she saw me. "Wow, Nicos been able to keep a friend for more than a two days? I'm shocked," she said sardonically.
Nico rolled his eyes at her as he set his backpack down on the island in their kitchen.
"Believe me, I tried to get rid of him," Nico grumbled as he sat down.
"He seems nice though! If he keeps trying to get rid of you come to me," Hazel told me, causing Nicos eyes to widen.
"Will do," I respond with a laugh.
I sat down in the seat next to Nico, and he shifted to be as a far away from me as he could without moving seats. It didn't bother me really, I had a feeling it was going to be really hard to get him to be comfortable around me but I was determined to do it.
"Dads work called, he's having to go to California for a business thing and won't be back for a couple days," Hazel told Nico. Nico looked as if a heavy weight had been removed from his shoulders, which I figured it did feel like for him. From what ive seen of his father, Nicos dad was not a good guy.
"That's good," he said, sounding a little more enthusiastic than before.
"Now you'll have to deal with me even more without any excuses!" I say sarcastically, wiggling my eyebrows playfully at him.
"Fantastic," he said sardonically, laughing slightly; which I took as a really good sign.
"Great!" Hazel said enthusiastically. "It's your job now to get him to eat and actually go to sleep at a reasonable time then."
"That's fine, I can do that," I say smiling at Nico, who's cheeks flushed a shade of pink causing me to smile even more.
"I don't need a babysitter," Nico sneered at Hazel.
"Oh yeah, what did you eat today?" Hazel said in a very motherly tone. I had a feeling that she was kinda a mother to Nico, seeing as I don't think he had one around.
Nico pursed his lips and his pink cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red. "Uhhh, does gum count?" he said grimacing at his sister.
"No it does not," she turned and grabbed salad she had been making from behind her. "Eat it."
"No, you made that for yourself," protested Nico.
"I'll make another, I was expecting that i'd have to," she narrowed her eyes at Nico.
"No, I'm fine," Nico pushed the back to Hazel.
"No," she shoved it back, "I swear to god Nico, eat it."
"I'll make something later," he said pushing the bowl away.
Hazel gave me a pleading look. "Um, I think you should just eat it. You haven't ate all day, and she said she'll make another."
Nicos eyes fell on me with a look of pure coldness. "I'm not hungry."
"Yes you are," I stated sternly, seeing as I heard his stomach growling on the bus barley 30 minutes ago.
"Your not me, how would you know," Nico mocked.
"I heard your stomach growling on the bus remember?"
Nico looked at a loss for words as he returned his gaze to the salad. "Fine," he said pulling the bowl closer and taking a bite.
I looked at Hazel and we shared a triumphant smile.
"Do you want one?" Hazel asked as she walked back over to their fridge.
"Uh sure, thanks," I said gratefully, "I can help if you'd like?"
"No I got it," Hazel said.
5 minutes later Hazel and I both had chicken salads in front of us, and with in another 10 minutes both of our bowls were empty. Nicos looked like he maybe took 5 bites, and the rest of the time was just pushing the lettuce around.
"You barley ate anything," I said, probably sounding as disappointed as I felt. Nico was extremely thin and clearly had a problem with not eating, so I was really hoping that with me here he'd eat more.
"I'm full," he lied, his eyes not moving from the full bowl.
"No your not, eat at least 3/4," Hazel ordered sternly.
He glared at Hazel but reluctantly took another bite. It took almost an hour but Nicos bowl was finally mostly ate.
"I swear if you tell me to eat more again I'm gonna hit you," Nico said, glaring at Hazel and I.
"Fine your good," Hazel said reluctantly, grabbing the bowl from him.
Nico looked kinda like he was gonna throw up, the way he was pursing his lips and chewing on the insides of his cheeks.
"Are you alright?" I asked putting my hand on his back in concern. He flinched at my touch but to my surprise didn't move away.
He nodded in response but I saw his lips tighten to a thin line as he brought his hand up to his temples like he had a headache. He put one finger up and he speed walked down a hallway and into a room.
"Nico?" I said hurrying after him. Approaching the door I heard retching and realised he was throwing up. Hazel walked over to me when she saw my concerned face.
"Oh shit, he hasn't done this in awhile," she said in a hushed tone, that made me think she was talking more to herself.
"Nico! Are you ok?" I said knocking gently on the door.
"Fine-" he stuttered out, but his word was cut off by the sound of retching again. I put my hand on the door knob and realized it was unlocked. I opened it and rushed to his side rubbing his back like my mom always does when I'm sick. I noticed his hair was falling in his face so i pulled it back then looked at Hazel asking silently for a hair tie. She handed me on and I pulled his hair back into a short little pony tail to keep his hair out of his face.
After a couple minutes he leaned back onto the wall and put his head in his hands. I sat next to him and noticed Hazel-to my surprise-walk back toward the kitchen as if to say "you got this."
"Are you feeling better now?" I asked quietly, still rubbing circles on his back.
"I'm fine," he grumbled into his knees.
"No your not, but that's alright," I say moving to sit closer to him. This time he jerked away from me, but thankfully didn't go running away. I noticed that by the unsteadiness of his breathing he was crying. I wanted to hug him and hold him in my arms and tell him everything's gonna be alright but I knew that would be crossing a line for him. With things like that he needed to make the first move, and knew it was going to be a long time from now.
