Smiles were stretched widely across the classroom as they all jumped up in a roaring fit, racing to the class door. Luca was hustled into the classroom, and his eyes immediately fell to mine. Just like the night before, his sapphire eyes aligned with mine lost in the feeling that I knew now we had both shared.
The cheers and roars were silenced by his deafening gaze. And that slight, goofy grin that arched onto his face. His eyes were lost in the moment of something that felt right and I had seemed to forget about the confusion that crossed my mind.
A tugging on my dress made me slip from his eyes and I looked down at Rose, one of my students.
"Isnt it great that he's here?", she asked leaning on the desk, and she watched with me. Rose had the maturity level of an adult, she was the caretaker of the class and she was also very serious.
She loved mimicking my attitude and my hand behavior, she was my little assistant teacher and she was a class favorite.
"Ye- Yes, it is", I affirmed for her and she looked at me suspiciously.
"I know when someone is lying, like last week Mauve said she didn't steal Abby's crayons but I saw her do it and she lied to me and she did that same thing, that you do with your eyes", Rose said and I couldn't help but marvel at the way she carried herself. Rose was someone who couldn't help but point out everything, and she reminded me of Ally, but without the high expectations.
Rose was someone you couldn't lie to, she had the heart of an angel, that's why she was given the nickname Rose.
"He didn't tell me he was coming, he just showed up and disrupted class and I didn't even tell him where I worked and he didn't even ask me", I couldn't help but ramble about the problems I was facing to the most mature adult in the room.
"Don't you want him here? I can have him gone in a couple minutes if you don't want him here.", she said watching for my expressions. And I knew I wanted him to stay, but I was surprised is all.
"No, no it's okay, everyone seems to be having a good time", I told her and she nodded her head, and sunk down in the chair next to me.
"How come you're not having a good time?", I asked her and a look of seriousness crossed her face. Rose was one of the most guarded kids, I had ever met. She had a heart for the kids, but she didn't like adults.
And I spent hours talking to her getting one word answers, to questions that I knew she had more to say. After a rough week of Rose being as quiet as a mouse, I was called by the cops to come to the house as a 911 call. And there she was taking care of her siblings, her foster parents had left and she was all alone, feeding and caring for over five siblings.
She saw me and she rushed for a hug and suddenly she had become a very close friend in the classroom.
"I never really liked football, I know who he is because of Ray, and everyone else is really excited I wouldn't want to impose", she spoke, selflessly.
"I promise you won't impose, when did you learn that word?", I asked the second-grader that stood before me.
I felt another tug on my dress as I looked down to see Jasmine. Or Miss Jasmine, as she liked to be addressed, she said it was very professional.
