Twas the night before the wicked and wickedly came out to play, before the witches, goblins and vampires roamed the street freely. I was beginning to turn into a ghost myself, my fingers had been drained of its blood, leaving me with a Halloween costume that didn't take much time to plan.
Halloween was tomorrow and I just had to finish one costume, one costume was left before I threw my sewing machine away. I was supposed to make my costume this year, we had all drawn out plans in class to make our costumes and the kids loved mine. It was Belle's dress, it was supposed to be a big ballgown. But you can't start something that big the day before.
I had always wanted to go as Belle, but this year turns out I'll be a fairy godmother, which was what I was last year. And the year before that, and the year before that too.
"Did you finish my costume?" Ray asked, running in for his five minute update and as he heard his disappointing answer he ran back out, counting to at least five before coming back in.
"Almost... come here", I summoned him over as I held his costume against him trying to find the right color.
This year, just like me Ray had on the same costume. But this was by choice not by the circumstances, every year he went dressed up as Luca. You can see how terrifying it is staring at your high school prom date's last name that abandoned you, trying to stitch it on a jersey each year.
Now it was different as I looked at the jersey I had stitched on a late night, being very petty and messing up the small details. But Ray noticed them all and I fixed it the next year, telling him I was exhausted the year before.
Now I had asked him this year if he wanted to wear the real and many jerseys he had gotten from Luca for Halloween. But he stood by my many nights of sewing the jersey from scratch and swore he would wear this for every Halloween.
"Isn't it strange bud, the guy you dress up as each year is now coming to the party?" I asked him, as he shimmied the costume over his little self.
"I never thought I would meet him", he mumbled as he put the costume over his head and he walked over towards me, wanting me to pull it down.
"What happened to your costume?" He asked me, looking in my closet for the dress I was supposed to make.
"I didn't have time to make it, and I lost my sketch", I told him as he nodded his head, trying to pull down my go-to costume every year. I must say it did suit me, I wasn't the princess but the go to girl for anything you needed. I made wishes come true, I was a real life fairy godmother.
"I like your fairy godmother costume, you always keep candy in your hat", he teased at the costume as I helped him pull it down. I opened the bag, airing out the smell of old candy.
"It'll do", I sighed, pulling the costume out of the black trash bag, and hanging it up back in the closet.
I laid out my outfit for later, as tonight Luca and I would be alone. Ray was staying here with Ally whenever she ended up coming home.
Ally was supposed to come before Luca, hence the perfect timing, except she kept getting late texting me about traffic and such.
But Luca came first, knocking on the door, looking around him with a biased view. I opened the door as Ray ran out, giving him a big hug and pulling him inside. He gave me a quick kiss and I followed them inside, shutting the door behind us.
Ray and Luca were occupied with themselves as I hung up each costume, knowing I would have to haul a van from the principal to fit every single one of the kids' costumes. But I hung them neatly, knowing I could never deal with rushing and being unorganized tomorrow.
