His hands warmed my body, holding them against my skin like a sheet of cloth, softening the load of guilt that riled inside me. So much had changed. Change that was needed, wanted, but it felt wrong. Lying here, staring at him.

It felt wrong being here. Would it ever feel right between us? Or was I just believing things would go back to the way they are? The way things used to be, breakfast in bed, stolen kisses any moment they allowed for it, and loving each other like the earth revolved around us.

His sun kissed skin, bruised arms wrapping around my body. I wiggled against him, pushing my body closer to the cradled warmth of him. The warmth that I needed and loved. But there was that feeling again, the one where you wanted it so much but you knew it was bad. Bad for everyone involved, hurting him again, like this.

"Cara Mia". His voice rang like a wind chime in the sky as I turned to face him, my head raising to him. He smiled, seeing my face. His hands tightened around me, as he hugged and hugged.

"Happy New Years". He said, kissing the top of my head.

"Happy New Years Luca".

"I love having you here". He said, as he bit his tongue, he needed, and wanted to say something more.

"I have a team meeting at five  with my manager in Arizona, after my game I'll be back". I wasn't wrong, it was just like old times, him telling me about his schedule, lazily lying in bed as he left the house with a kiss and hoping he would be back before I could realize he was gone. It was just like old times, me waiting for him to come home.

But it was different, this time.

"You're going for a week?" I asked him, appalled by the dates, remembering that this world again was one I didn't fit in.

"We're prepping for the rest of the season, but I promise after my game I'll be back and we can talk, you and me, about whatever you want, about whatever we need to talk about". He was calm, calm and genteel like a man who knew what he wanted, more so, he knew what he needed.

"You're giving me a week?"

"At the end of the week I'll return to you, just the same". He kissed my head again, my heart swindled as I realized he wanted this forever.

"Just the same?"

"Just the same". He repeated.

"What if I can't give you that?" I asked him, and his expression softened.

"Then I'll keep asking, until you're ready". He affirmed, as he looked at me begging me to just say yes.

"But today. I just want to spend it with Ray and you". His charm shrieking me into stone as I swallowed the thoughts running into my mouth and I nodded my head.

"I'll make breakfast". I offered, hoping he would let me help.

"I'll make it for you". He smiled, getting up from his comfy seat on bed as he pulled the sheets away. I followed him out of the room, as he held on to the little remaining hope I had given him. "I'll help". I said, as I followed him and he understood.

"I'll help too". Ray said, from behind us as I turned to face him and he ran and hugged me. Whispering "Happy New Years". He kissed my cheek and smiled.

"Happy New Years, bub". I said, hugging him softly.

"I was thinking maybe some waffles?" Luca said, as Ray ran to him next, wishing him the same with a big hug. A hug of life, a hug meaning the world around us was in order. No matter what happened between Luca and I, we couldn't let our relationship ruin theirs.
