Chapter 42

~~Kazuto's POV~~

          Asuna held Rika, not allowing her to move, and held the knife next to her neck.

If I do something that'll make her mad, she could kill Rika.

          This is a horrible situation. I can't afford to make a mistake. One wrong move and Rika might be split in two.

"Asuna! What in the world are you doing! Stop this right now!"

          Her smile turned upside down. Her eyes were filled with fury and hatred. She looked really scary.

"Why do you care, huh? Where's your girlfriend, huh? Why are you trying to save Rika, huh?!"

          She shouted at the top of her lungs. I've never seen her this mad before. Her voice didn't only represent hatred but it gave off a sad feeling. She started holding Rika even tighter. She looked frustrated now. At this point, I don't even know how she feels.

"She's a friend. Of course I'll save her. And Shino isn't even here."

"A friend? How about me?"

          I was shocked. I had no idea where that came from.

"Are we still friends, Kazuto?"

          I didn't know what to say. She had done so many bad things but up until all those recent events that she caused, I loved her. I wanted to be friends. I wanted to, really but, I don't know. I stared at the ground with a blur look on my face. If I say yes, I'm not sure what's going to happen. But if I say no, she'll probably kill Rika. I don't want to see a friend die.

"Are you really... thinking about it?"

          Oh no, I took too long.

"Are you seriously going to think about that!"

Ah, I killed Rika... I took too long.

          I thought that that was the end for Rika. But instead of blood dripping, I saw tears instead. Asuna dropped the knife and let Rika go. Rika immediately ran to me. She hid behind me. I whispered to her to just run outside and find Shino. She obeyed and was out of sight in seconds, bolting to the exit like a runner reaching the finish line.

          Asuna dropped to her knees, into the blood stained carpet. This was the loudest I've heard her cry. I stared down at her, not knowing whether to fear her or to feel bad. Both ran through me but there was no definite winner.

"Asu-"

"I'm not even your friend anymore? I just keep on falling. I'll be at the bottom soon."

"Asuna, no, you're my frie-"

          Before I could say my last word, she interrupted.

"Then why didn't you save me?"

"Save you?"

          I didn't understand what she was saying.

"Asuna, I don't remember you needing saving."

          She cried even louder now.

"L-lately I've f-felt like you're always on t-time with everyone e-else."

"I-it's not like that, I-"

          I stuttered a little but Asuna cut me off again.

"I haven't told anybody. B-but, I killed my ex boyfriend."

          I froze a little. A little scared that she killed someone. At least now we know who killed him.

"Y-yes, I was h-happy to get back together w-with him, b-but... he used me. He tried g-getting back with his girlfriend."

"Yea, you told me..."

"A-and then he got a-angry at me a-and started hitting me."

          I thought about the things that could have happened to Asuna. I knew she was a strong fighter but I never thought she would be weak to her ex.

"One d-day I got really a-angry a-and... I s-s-stabbed h-h-h-him!"

          I didn't say anything. All I did was listen.

"So Kazuto, why didn't you save me?"

"Asuna, how would I know?"

"DON'T GIVE ME THAT! HOW IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU KNOW RIKA WAS IN TROUBLE!!!"

          At that moment, that's when I realized that every time I save someone... it's more or less... a coincidence that I'm there. My brain went blank.

Why couldn't I have saved Asuna?

"Kazuto, just tell me, why didn't you save me back then?"
