The grave

It was barely morning but we already started our journey.

The car sped towards the horizon. My head rested against the window as my half lidded eyes focused on particularly nothing. A feeling of guilt built inside my chest.

A sigh escaped from my lips. Travis drove the car silently. His expression was neutral as ever. But I could see those tanzanite eyes darkened after last night. It was almost dawn. The sun slowly rose, spreading light towards the whole world. But it was still dark as it's the season of winter.

We were going to meet someone. Because we have to test the DNA. And the only relative I know is someone I did not want to meet. I just couldn't look into her eyes.

Mason's mother.

I closed my eyes tightly.

It took us three hours to reach the place where she lived with his grandmother. They just moved into the farthest corner of the city after that incident.

This place seemed rural and more like a village. It was still eight in the morning. And I haven't touched food since yesterday. But now I was suffering the outcome. I felt weak and nauseated.

We stopped in front of a dingy shop. The cold air hit me when I got out of his car. Our destination was still thirty minutes away from here. But we needed a bit rest and energy before meeting Mason's mother.

That place was peaceful. It was a hillside area. And we could see all around the city from here. Flowers decorated the front of the shop and people bustled around.

Sounds of laughter, chattering were heard as children from the neighborhood played around and people got out early to buy goods from those small shops.

The smell of caffeine and warm food hit my nostrils when we entered that small café. It was packed with people but still a few tables were still left. It looked like people didn't sit. They stood in groups with cups and snacks in their hands and gossiped.

We took a seat beside the window, the mesmerizing view of hill tracks was truly charming. The food came a few moments later after our order. Smell of delicious breakfast assaulted my senses. I dug in without any formalities as my stomach craved for food.

Both me and Travis ate our breakfast silently, each engrossed in a world of their own. Both of us needed some time and space of our own.

Thirty minutes later we departed from the café and go in the car. I secured my seatbelt and Travis started the engine.

The car sped on the narrow road living this crowded, lively place behind.

My hand slightly trembled as it touched the wooden door. I softly knocked for three times. I bit my inner cheeks and held my breath.

A warm hand enclosed against my cold fingers. I looked at Travis. He was looking ahead.

The door opened, revealing an elderly lady in formal dress. "How can I help you?"

"Umm..we want to see Mrs. Blake. We are.. Mason's friend." I said.

Her eyes widened for a second but she schooled her emotions under a friendly smile. "Please come in."

I could taste the metallic taste in my mouth as my teeth unconsciously dug sharply against my inner cheeks. Bitter memories and fear resided in my heart.
