"I won't be gone long. I promise!" You told Rosie as you put your bag over your shoulder.
She simply shook her head and looked between you and Lily, who got off the couch and came over to hug her legs.
"It's okay, y/n. Work calls. I get that. It's not like you'll be gone forever. Besides, Lily and I can handle a few hours on our own. Right?" Rosie asked as she brushed her fingers through your daughter's hair, gazing at her fondly and watching as she nodded her head with a sleepy smile.
"Thanks for understanding and for staying. I'll be back in just a couple of hours."
With a peck on her lips and one lingering kiss to Lily's head, you walked out the door and left them alone for the next couple of hours.
"Okay, Lily. You've got an hour till it's your bedtime. What would you like to do?"
She didn't give her an answer, simply putting her tiny hand in Rosie's bigger one to drag her back to the sofa.
Yelling out the name of her favorite film, Rosie pretended to be annoyed, but Lily just laughed as she said,
"That one again? We watch it every time I'm here!"
She giggled as Rosé tickled her sides then curled up in her arms happily.
But she didn't dare complain about the movie. Even though she's lost track of how many times she's seen it over the last week and she knows the entire thing by heart, able to recite every line of every scene if she ever needed to, she still loved it each time she watched it. Not because she's crazy about the movie.
But because Lily is and even though she's only been around for the last four months of her life, she'd do anything for her; anything.
She found herself getting into the film as it played, but she found herself looking away and down at the little girl whose head just fell onto her chest as she fell asleep.
She chuckled and grabbed the remote to turn it off before she carefully picked her up and headed for the stairs.
"Movie," she mumbled against Rosé's neck, only to stop and start to fall back asleep when Rosie gave her a kiss on her head and took the stairs one by one, more careful than ever before.
"You're tired, honey. Don't worry, we'll finish it tomorrow. The three of us."
Lily tiredly nodded against her shoulder and rubbed her eyes.
"Okay, baby. Here we go." She whispered softly into her hair before gently laying her down onto her bed. The little girl opened her eyes and took her hand before Rosé even got the chance to cover her up.
"Story,"
"I don't think you need a story tonight, sweetie." She giggled as she watched Lily's eyes close but open again as she fought the sleep so she could hear the story.
"Need story." She pouted and Rosie knew she stood no chance in standing her ground to simply kiss her goodnight and watch her sleep quickly. She was stubborn, like you.
She wasn't going to sleep without a story.
"Okay."
She went through the books on the shelf, eventually settling on goodnight moon. "I'll only read to you if you let me cover you up."
She was happy to let Rosé cover her up and place the bunny she got for her against her chest, close to her heart.
"Okay. Cozy?"
She nodded and then closed her eyes as Rosie started to read to her.
"Goodnight stars. Goodnight air. Goodnight noises everywhere." Rosie read out loud a few minutes later, tearing her eyes away from the page to look at Lily, who looked like she was fast asleep.
She put the book aside and tucked her in all the way, bringing the covers up to her chin.
She knelt on the floor by her bed and made sure her nightlight was on before taking a moment to gaze at the small girl who has already taken up the biggest space in her big heart.
It's only been four months since they first met but she couldn't help but wonder how she'd gone so long without knowing her. Her love for you and for Lily was already impossible to put into words.
"Goodnight, sweet girl." She whispered before planting a lingering kiss on her head and then pulled away a moment later.
Her sock-covered feet quietly padded over to the door. She took a look back at her and went to close the door before she'd simply head downstairs and wait for you to come home.
But something made her freeze on her feet. Something... indescribably wonderful.
"Night, mom,"
Rosie's breath hitched and she turned back to look at Lily who was on her other side now, bunny still close to her chest and tight in her arms.
She blinked away the tears before she made her way downstairs. The door opened just as she reached the last step and she watched you kick off your shoes and shrug off your jacket.
You lifted your head and saw Rosé and, instantly, you were smiling.
"Hey, babe. How'd everything go? Is she asleep-" You stopped talking when you saw her looking tearful. Your heart dropped and your mind went to worst-case-scenario.
"Oh no. Rosé? What happened? Where's Lily?"
"She's asleep in bed."
"Is everything okay? Why do you look like you're gonna burst into tears?" You asked as you placed your hands gently on her cheeks.
"She..." she paused, immediately breaking out into a grin as she thought back to what happened only a moment ago. "She called me mom,"
Your heart began to leap in your chest.
"Is that okay with you?"
"It's perfect." She chuckled tearfully.
You dropped your forehead to hers, watching as her eyes filled with stars. You leaned in for a kiss but your moment was ruined by the floor creaking. Both your heads turned and you saw Lily at the top of the stairs, rubbing the sleep from her eyes with her bunny from Rosé still close to her chest.
"Hey, baby," you climbed the stairs and guided her back to bed and Rosie followed, watching you both with the warmest feeling in her pounding heart. "Are you okay?"
She nodded, mumbling that she missed you and heard you come inside. You kissed her goodnight like you do every night and brushed her cheek softly with your hand as her eyes closed.
"Goodnight, baby."
"Night, mommy," she whispered and when Rosie mumbled out 'goodnight' again to her, she cracked a gummy smile and said, "Night, mom,"
You took Rosie's hand and led her across the hall to your room. You closed the door a crack and embraced her in your arms as she hugged you tight.
"I've never been so happy." She whispered to you, her smile bigger than you've ever seen before. "I love you... both of you."
"Love you too." You whispered and kissed her lovingly. "Stay tonight?"
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. I think she would love for you to join us for breakfast."
She quickly nodded her head and fell into bed beside you, but you didn't fall asleep quickly.
Instead, you stayed awake and let her talk about how happy she felt and how much her life has changed since you both came into the picture just months ago and how she couldn't ever imagine life without you both now.
