There was something different about Lily over the last few days.

Your thirteen-year-old daughter has been even happier than usual.

You can see it in her eyes and the way that her smile has become even brighter, as well as the way that she's practically jumping out of the car and running through the school doors when you and Rosie drop her off each morning.

So when she arrived home from school and pulled you and Rosie aside to talk to you, you had some suspicions as to where this was leading.

"Momma, mom, can we talk?" She asked as you and Rosie looked through the cupboards and fridge to try and figure out what to do for dinner.

But upon hearing Lily's question, you both dropped everything for her.

"Of course, sweetheart. What's going on?" Rosé asked as Lily sat down at the table.

You both sat down with her, patiently waiting for her to talk to you.

"Is it too young for me to date?"

You were both taken aback by her question.

"You have a crush, don't you?" You asked and when Lily nodded her head, a big smile tugged at your lips.

"Aw, your first crush! How cute!" What's their name?" Rosie asked curiously.

She looked a little nervous as she looked between you two.

"Sweetie? Is everything okay?" You asked as you gave her shoulder an encouraging and comforting squeeze. "Talk to us. We're listening."

"I think I like girls," Lily confessed.

Of course, for very obvious reasons, that didn't surprise or bother you at all.

But she seemed to be a little nervous to confess such a thing.

You understand why.

Even confessing to a source of love and comfort can still be scary sometimes.

"That's okay." Rosie smiled.

"Am I too young to know for certain?" She wondered.

You scooted your chair close to hers before gently placing your hand on her shoulder.

"Is that what you feel in your heart?"

Lily nodded.

"Then follow it." You softly spoke. "You know yourself better than anyone else does. As you grow up, that could change, or it won't. That's perfectly fine either way. But if you feel that you like girls, then you like girls. That's perfectly fine. You know Rosie and I will love you just the same."

"Yeah, sweetheart, your mom is right. You just have to listen to your heart. If you like girls, then that's who you are, and no matter what, the friends you make and the family that you have will love you just the same if they're meant to be in your life. We love you lots."

"Love you too." She smiled.

"Now, what's this girl's name?" Rosie asked.

"Ava," Lily said, and just thinking about her crush caused a rush of happiness to come over her.

"And you know her how?" You wondered.

"She's in my math class. She's so pretty and so smart! She sits next to me and we have lockers right next to each other, too!"

"Do you know if she likes you, too?" You asked as you gently squeezed her shoulder.

Lily shook her head.

"I don't know if she likes me the way that I like her."

She looked a little sad upon answering that question.

"You won't know if you don't talk to her," Rosie said, causing Lily's eyes to go wide with nervousness.

"What if she doesn't like me that way?"

"Would you rather wonder that for the rest of your life?" You asked. "It can be scary, I know. But sometimes, you have to make the jump. If you like her, tell her. If she doesn't feel the same, then you move on. You will find someone someday. Everyone has someone meant for them and you're so young with your whole life ahead of you. You have to ask if you want to know, but if she doesn't then you accept it and move on."

"Okay. Should I tell her in class tomorrow? Or at lunch?"

"Whenever you feel comfortable," Rosie said as she brushed Lily's hair back. "You don't have to rush. Think about when you feel ready. Don't push yourself. There's always time."

"Lots of time." You said and kissed Lily's forehead softly.

"Okay." She said before taking a deep breath. "I want to tell her."

"Then go for it, honey. Everything will be okay, no matter what." You assured.

"And we will love you unconditionally, no matter what," Rosie promised.

"Thank you," she said before hugging you and Rosie softly.

You and Rosie pulled away and watched her excitedly rush upstairs.

"I'm so proud of her and so happy for her."

"She's growing up to be a smart and amazing girl. Just like her mom." Rosie smiled before kissing your lips and hugging you tightly, feeling so excited for your young daughter discovering who she is.
