The pounding on the front door interrupted Lily and Rosie's giggles as they laughed along to the film playing.

You came out of the kitchen and put down some popcorn on the table in front of the couch where your girls were cuddled up and waiting for you to return.

You and Rosé exchanged worried glances as the pounding came once more.

"y/n? Want me to call someone?"

"No. Don't worry about it. I'm sure it's nothing. Stay here, I'll be right back." You promised and put on a brave face so you wouldn't worry Lily, who was looking between you and Rosie.

You walked to the front door and opened it and as soon as you saw who it was, you gasped in shock.

"What are you doing here?"

"I want Lily." Joe, your ex, said. He wasn't asking to see her, he was demanding.

"Uh..." you paused, speechless as you stared at the man in front of you who was more of a stranger than what he should be. "No."

"What do you mean 'no', y/n? That's my daughter!"

"Oh! That's funny! It only took you almost six years to say that out loud!" You reminded him and stepped out onto the porch so he couldn't barge inside or attempt to sneak a peek at your little girl.

"Maybe if you weren't such a jerk all the time I wouldn't have left! You gave me no choice! And now, you want to creep back and say that you're ready to be her father when you reek of alcohol and look like you're gonna hurt me again? Like you always used to do?"

He clenched his jaw, staring you down with a look of anger in his eyes.

You used to love looking into those eyes. There was a time in your life when he was your whole world. But you don't even recognize him.

It's been six years since you told him about your pregnancy and things got worse from then on, leaving you no choice but to leave and go far away. But no matter how far you went, it never felt like you were far enough away from him.

And now he has the audacity to stand there in front of you and say that he wants to see his daughter?

"Sure took you long enough to come around. Look at everything you've missed! Her birthdays. Christmas. Easter. School things. But now you want to come back? Why?"

He clenched his jaw angrily, seething for some unknown reason.

"You didn't want to be a dad then! Why now, Joe?!"

He raised his hand in anger, only to lower it when he heard,

"Hey! Don't you dare lay your hands on her!" Rosie yelled as the front door opened. She heard the shouting and she was growing worried. All she could do was feel thankful she opened that door and stepped out when she did.

"Rosie, meet Joe. Joe is Lily's dad."

She went wide-eyed before suddenly feeling more protective than ever before in her life. She could see the way he was staring you down. Hell, he was close to putting his hands on you again! She had to protect you and Lily.

"Why are you here?"

"I was wondering the same thing." You said and looked back at Joe, who opened his mouth and got ready to scream at you again only for the door to creak and Lily run to Rosie and hug her legs tightly.

She was trembling, hugging them tight out of fear as she looked at the stranger then buried her face in Rosie's pajama pants.

"Lily," Joe smiled and stepped forward, only for the small girl to get behind Rosie and hug her tighter.

"Don't go near her." You warned.

Joe scoffed and looked between the three of you before looking back at the little girl who was watching everything go down.

"LIly! It's daddy. Don't you want to come and see me?"

"No!" She yelled and it only made Joe angrier.

"See? She doesn't want you here, either. Just go." You said and nodded to his car, but he wasn't giving up so fast.

"No. I'm not going. I'm not giving up."

"Wow, that's a whole different perspective that you have now than you did years ago!"

He seethed, staring you down furiously.

"Why don't we let her choose. What do you say, Lily?"

"Want mommy," she mumbled, "And my mom."

His eyes fell on Rosie who couldn't help but smile cockily.

"You heard her, Joe. She chose, just like you wanted. Now leave."

"Or else we're calling the cops!" Rosé added and Joe stood back and lowered his head nervously.

"Fine. Whatever. You were never with it anyway, y/n." He grumbled under his breath and you watched to make sure he drove away before you quickly stepped inside and locked the door.

Lily tugged at Rosie's shirt and she quickly knelt down so the small girl could crawl into her arms. She lifted her up and then stepped over to you where she laid her hand on your shoulder then pulled your head to her chest.

You were trembling, both you and Lily shook up.

"He's a bad guy," you mumbled. "He always has been and he got even worse after I told him I was pregnant. Things were...bad." You mumbled but stopped when you heard Lily sniffle. She was reaching out for you and you quickly took ahold of her and hugged her close.

"I'll tell you more about it in a few. Let me try to get her to bed."

Rosie nodded and kissed Lily's head lingeringly before watching you head up the stairs. Shee turned off the film and cleaned everything up to distract herself from her racing thoughts while you took your time in getting Lily to bed.

It was almost twenty minutes later when you came back down. Rosie was all ears, already sat on the couch to listen to your every word.

You cleared her throat and wiped away a tear threatening to slide down your cheek before looking at your worried girlfriend.

"Joe was a bad guy but I tried to look for the good in him... always. Things happened, we moved in together, I got pregnant. He wasn't always bad... before. He had some okay days, a couple of good ones mixed in. But then I told him he was gonna be a dad and he just turned into this monster."

"He... hurt you?" She asked, swallowing thickly as she sat there feeling both saddened and scared.

"Yeah." You mumbled, tear falling down your cheek. "So I left. I came here and I started my life with Lily. I swore I was gonna be the best mom to her that she could ever have."

"You're just that, y/n," she spoke as she took your hands into hers. "The most amazing mother."

"Thanks." You smiled. "I didn't think he'd ever show up again."

"Well, sadly, things in my life are really complicated. With news getting out and spreading about us being together and Lily in the mix of it all, it doesn't surprise me that he found out. It does frustrate me though."

You wordlessly scooted closer to her and laid your head on her chest.

"I don't know what would've happened if you weren't here."

"Well, you don't ever have to worry your pretty little head about that. I'm always gonna be here. I love you, both of you, and I'll always protect the both of you at all costs."

"Love you so much, Rosie." You whimpered and she tightened her arms around you, making you feel safe and secure.

You still worried he'd come back, but you knew with Rosie by your side that you and Lily would be safe and sound, no matter what.
