"Okay class I'll be making four teams of 6 and you'll be playing eachother. The teams are chosen at random and you are not allowed to switch." the gym teacher called.
Sakusa was put in team 2, you in team 3, with four boys and one other girl. She seemed shy, hiding behind her bangs. "Hey." you greet her making her jump slightly. "Here's a clip, to make sure your bangs don't get in the way" you say, handing her a spare clip. She looked up at you and smiled. "Thank you" she said in a small voice.
You found out her name was Mai and the other boys were Hideki, Kenji, Ichiro and Minoru. They were all pretty nice except for Hideki. He'd keep going on about how we should just leave it to the men and that if we played we'd lose.
You scoffed at the boy. "You do realise you're talking to the #1 female ace of America right? Keep your sexist opinions to yourself you bottom feeder". Everyone in the group was stunned, the boys snickering at Hideki. The boy named Ichiro approached you. "Sorry about him, he's an idiot" he explained. You smiled at him. "It's fine, I'm used to it."
He extends his hand out to me. "I'm Ichiro Ren. I sit a few seats away from you in home room."
You winced as you shook his hand, immediately grabbing your hand sanitiser. "Sorry I'm kind of a germaphobe, nothing against you" you explain. "Oh it's fine, we're used to Sakusa" he chuckled.
The fist match started and it was against team 1. Since it was gym class you only played 1 set and it was first to 10 points instead of 25.
Since the others had basically no knowledge of volleyball you coached them into roles quickly before the first match started.
10-3 was the score and honestly it was only because you weren't trying at all. You looked over to the scoreboard. Sakusa's team won 10-2. He saw you looking and smiled smugly. You stuck your tongue out at him before playing your second match. You won it 10-2.
Sakusa won his match 10-2 aswell.
Now it was time for the big showdown. You looked at eachother through the nets. The tension was so high the teacher nervously reminded us that it was just a game. Ignoring her, we both got ready to go hard despite our rookie teammates.
The match was difficult seeing as you basically had to receive, spike and block by yourself since nobody else could keep up though the same could be said for Sakusa. You each scored point after point, both of your teammates slowly backing away in fear of being hit by the ball.
The score was 9-9 and nobody knew who was going to win. You and Sakusa kept on going without hesitation until you ultimately got tired. Sakusa tossed the ball up high and you knew you didn't have enough stamina to recieve it. Just before the ball came down the bell rang signalling the end of class and the ball fell down without being spiked.
You let out a breath of relief as you wiped the sweat off your head. "Y/n you're amazing! You kept up with the top ace of Japan." Mei said excitedly. "Huh? He told me he was top three, not number one".
"He's the number one ace. And the only second year in the top 5. He's really amazing" she said.
You looked over at him to see he wasn't all that tired.
You walked up to him. "Hey. How tired are you". He thought about it for a second. "I could play another 2 sets" he said. You chuckled. "You really are the number one aren't you".
He nodded. "Though you're probably the best female player."
You nodded, tired out. "Cmon, let's go change so we can go home".
You changed back into uniform and walked out to see Sakusa surrounded by fangirls. Even though he had his mask on he still looked disgusted. You called out to him. "Omi, let's go now". He looked up at you and nodded, glad that you were there. The girls scowled at you and one grabbed Sakusa's arm. He pushed her away quickly, grabbing his hand sanitiser. "What the hell are you doing" he yelled at the girl. She looked as if she was about to tear up and you scoffed. 'He's not that intimidating' you muttered under your breath. "I-I'm sorry Sakusa it's just I-"
Sakusa scoffed, glaring down at the girl. "Don't ever touch me again." And with that he walked over to where you were standing, obviously still distressed.
"Wow, I'm surprised you even have fangirls when you act like that" you giggled.
"They're annoying brats" he scoffed as you both walked out of the school.
"Then what about me?"
Sakusa looked over at you. "What do you mean?"
"Am I an annoying brat?"
He scoffed again, looking away.
"You're probably the most annoying brat." he declared making you laugh.
"But I don't mind you" he muttered quietly.
You smiled at his small compliment and you both walked in silence down the road. Your house was the first to come up and Sakusa stared at the house. "You live at the same house?" he asked. You nodded. "Do you still live around here?" you asked him. He nodded too. "Only a few houses down actually" he mumbled.
"Oh?" You smiled mischievously. "That means we can hang out on weekends." you cheered.
"I refuse" he responded quickly. Just as he said that your door flew open and your mom was standing at the doorway. "Y/n, how was school?" she asked before looking behind you. "Is that you Sakusa?" she asked in disbelief. He nodded. "It's nice to see you Mrs. L/n." he greeted politely.
"Ah there's no need for the honourifics honey, call me Megumi. Are you busy? Come in, come in". she practically dragged you two in the house. "I'm making dinner Sakusa, you two can go upstairs while you wait." your mom said.
"Where's Kazuko?" You asked.
"Working. He won't be back for a few hours" she responded.
Sakusa stood awkwardly at the front door. "Sorry, she's like this" you say quietly. He just nods and you both take your shoes off and head upstairs to your room.
"I cleaned it yesterday, you can sit down" you explain as you put your school stuff away. Sakusa sat down on the edge of your bed, cautiously looking around before deciding it was safe and took his mask and jacket off.
"I haven't been here in so long" he said, looking around. "It's kind of bland" he stated.
"Yeah well I only came back a week ago, it's not gonna be filled with posters" you responded, flopping down on the bed. Sakusa stayed put, looking over at you. "What?" you asked.
"You're starting in the girls volleyball team right?"
You sat up. "Yeah, why?"
He stared forward. "I was wondering if you'd be the boys teams manager.
"No way. I want to play, not watch" you said stubbornly.
He chuckled a little, lying down on the bed. "Yeah, thought so".
You laid back down beside him staring at the ceiling. Sakusa spoke again. "Tell me about America."
You thought about it. "It was okay. I fought with my dad a lot though".
"Why?"
You chuckled, slightly embarrassed. "First it was because he took me away from my friends and family, then it was about controlling my life. I'm so happy I got the chance to come back, it was so toxic in that house" you sighed.
You wondered why you were telling him all this. Yes he was your childhood best friend but it had been 8 years and this was the first day of being reunited. Still, you couldn't help but feel comfortable around him.
You felt his hand play with a strand of your hair. "So soft" he mumbled without thinking. You looked over at him and only then did you realise how close you two were, your noses almost touching. You both moved back, flustered. "S-sorry" you mumbled, embarrassed.
Just as he looked like he wanted to say something your mom called you both downstairs. "Time to eat" you said and you both went downstairs, opting to not speak about what happened.
