The rain masked the teardrops currently running down your dirt covered face. "Maybe I was never prepared to take on such difficult missions." You thought to yourself. You shivered as you sat in front of the compound, considering if you should go in or not. It was frigid and dark outside, and you didn't feel welcome. "It was all my fault. People died because of me.' The thoughts killed you. They killed every last scrap of hope, and energy in your heart and psyche.

Your shoulder was touched by a soft hand. You jumped slightly, but soon eased into your lover's touch. Bucky sat down on the bench next to you and pulled you close to him. "It hurts to see you cry, little one." You let out a small whimper of utter despair, and hopelessness. "Where did I go wrong, Bucky? What did I do that made that mission go to hell? Please! Tell me!" Bucky held you tighter. He didn't want to let you go. He saw you when you were at your low points and it was not good. The dark parts of your mind surfaced, and you ended up a risk to yourself. The only thing he wanted was for you to be safe. In the process of helping you up with his hand lower down your back, you winced. He raised his hand to find the dark, sticky, scarlet fluid of blood on his hands.

"Oh my god, Y/n. Why didn't you tell me you were hurt? You have a fucking gunshot wound back here!" You didn't bother explaining anything as you got dizzy. Upon collapsing onto the floor, all he did was scoop your fallen body into his arms, and he carried you to the med bay. Bruce examined the wound, and informed Bucky it was better than it looked. There were no vital organs hit, and the bullet was only under the skin. 'A simple fix', he considered it to be.As the bullet was pulled from your back, Bucky held your hand, and fixed a strong and steady gaze in your eyes. When the wound was touched, it frightened you. Despite being numb, you felt the pressure of the machine doing the work. Looking at the soldier seated on a chair next to the exam table, you fought to keep your eyes open. Bucky placed a tender touch on your cheek, wiping away a couple of tears from under your eyes. "Sleep little one. You're safe." He said clutching your limp hand next to your body. You feel your vision close as you accept the dark embrace of unconsciousness.

When your eyes fluttered open, you were flooded with light. Steve and Sam sat quietly to the left of you. Bucky was lying his head on the bed, your hand in his. "Bucky?" You said in a small, scratchy voice. Everyone's focus was now on you, and a new doctor was rushing to your side. "Oh dove. I thought I lost you. Would you please tell me why you didn't tell me earlier that you were hurt?" With a sigh, you scooted over on the bed next to you and gently patted a spot on it. As Bucky sat next to you, he pulled you into his arms, and kept you safe and secure.

"I felt like I deserved to die the individuals that were killed. This was not the mission for me, and I let everyone down. Buck, I don't belong here anymore. I don't." The tears you tried so hard to swallow, fell. Bucky tenderly kissed your forehead, and pulled you closer. Dove, please listen to me. You belong here. You are needed here." With innocent eyes, you looked up from the cozy spot of his chest. "Promise?" you asked. He smiled and answered "Yes, little one. I promise. As you laid back down on his chest, you let out a contented sigh. The kiss on your forehead put you at ease, causing you to drift off into a deep sleep, knowing you were safe and sound in Bucky's embrace.
