I Hate You A Little Less Today

Chapter 11

I shuffled in my bed all night, for some reason I couldn't sleep.

I stared at my ceiling for a minute before getting up and reaching for a robe. I slid into comfortable shoes and I decided to go to the kitchen to make myself some tea.

I walked through the rocky halls, I could hear the wind howling and crickets chirping in the background. The night serene and quiet.

As I walked towards the door of the kitchen I realized that the lights were on, I slowly squeezed through the door looking around curiously.

To my complete shock I stumbled onto 2 new faces. It was two men who towered over me, they both quickly looked at me seemingly in shock.

"You both can't sleep either?" I shuffled my way to the tea leaf grinder. I started making the tea.

The two men looked at each other hesitantly.

"Y-yes, we both were just chatting about our next expedition" One of them responded.

"Are you guys new faces? I haven't seen you around" I scanned them for a second. For some reason they seemed very nervous. They were both visibly sweating.

"Yeah, we are" The one with blonde hair answered, "I'm Reiner, this is Bertholdt" they finally introduced themselves.

I smiled at them and continued to sleepily finish making my tea. "Which squad are you guys in-"

"We actually have to go, but it was a pleasure meeting you, hope to see you again later..." Bertholdt grabbed Reiner and dragged him out of the kitchen forcefully.

Reiner held into the door frame turning back at me, "I apologize, I didn't catch your name?" He asked while Bertholdt was still trying to drag him.

"Y/N" I answered giving him a warm smile. He smiled back and let go of the frame. Both of them disappearing into the dark.

That was...strange.

I went back to my room and sipped my tea which was not sweet enough for me considering the lack of honey that the scouts seem to have.

I fell asleep finally.

I was awaken by screams.

I jolted from my bed and quickly changed, screeching outside of the building. In a wave of panic I ran outside.

It was coming from Hange's tent, where she kept her experiment titans. I immediately thought of the worst.

Oh god what could be happening inside, what if she's getting eaten by the titans, what would I even do in that situation.

My heartbeat was pounding out of my chest. I finally got to the tent and flayed open the entrance, my stomach got weak from the stench that swirled around in the air. The whole tent was covered in some sort of smoke. I saw Hange screaming through the warm vapor that surrounded us. I paced fast towards her reaching for her arm.

As I reached her I turned to look at what she had her vision locked on. My eyes grew wide and my mouth opened in shock.

It was the carcasses of the two titans. Their bones and flesh. They seemed like they were disintegrating.

I had never seen such a gory and disgusting sight, I was in shock from seeing the slimy decomposing organs of the monsters. My hand flew to my mouth, my ears started to ring as I lost my balance.

I started almost falling back, when I felt someone grab my hips from behind me, stabilizing me in place. I fell back on this person.

"Calm down..." I felt his breath on my ear. I recognized his voice instantly.

Levi wrapped his arms around me, I completely gave into him and let him hold me completely.

"That's what happens when you kill a titan" He whispered. Still holding me tight.

My eyes were still locked on the carcasses, there were many people around just looking as well, all completely perplexed with the situation. Meanwhile Hange was still screaming at the top of her lungs. Erwin walked over to her and tried to calm her down.

I was paralyzed. Levi still holding me from behind, started walking me out of the tent. He rubbed my arms gently as we walked.

Once out of the tent, the fresh air immediately woke me up from the shock.

"That was...why were they..." I stumbled over my words trying to process what I had just seen.

"Somebody killed them" Levi grabbed my arm and led me even further from the tent. "It seems like there's a traitor within the scouts"

I got shivers from the thought of the grounds not being safe anymore.

"A traitor? Why would someone possibly want to go against that research? What would they have to gain?" I looked at Levi, who held a pensive expression.

"I don't know" He whispered.

We had now stopped walking, we were in the middle of the field.

"Somebody last night sneaked around and killed those titans, knowing well that this would set the scouts back." He continued. "It was probably Eren Jeager. Him being a titan himself, it would make sense"

I started thinking about last night, my heart dropped. I had already thought that those guys Reiner and Bertholdt were being strange, could it be possible that it was their doing?

Should I tell Levi?

I was suspicious. But if I told Levi that the three of us were out last night, we all would probably get interrogated...this was the scouts we were talking about, perhaps we would get tortured.

My breathing started getting noticeably more audible.

"Are you ok?" Levi placed his hands on my shoulders.

"I just- I just don't think it's Eren" I tried to advert my anxiety.

"What are you basing this off of? A crush you have on him or what" He raised his eyebrow slightly.

I shook his hands off of me, "What?! No" I backed away, "It's just a hunch"

Oh god what if it is Reiner and Bertholdt. Would I be putting the scouts in danger if I keep my mouth shut to save my own ass?

"I got to go" I blurted out. Making Levi scan my face in confusion.

"Did seeing titans really scatter your brain this much?" He squinted his eyes in a demeaning way.

"Yes" I sharply answered. And quickly walked away from him, leaving him alone in the middle of the field.

I walked as fast as I could back to my room, locking the door behind me. I started pacing back and forth in my room, trying to calm myself down.

If I tell Erwin, Hange or Levi that I saw Bertholdt and Reiner last night, I could be falsely accusing two innocent guys.

But if they aren't innocent then I would be potentially endangering the lives of everyone.

I work with finances, why am I tangled in this mess. How do I tell them that I was out last night without sounding incriminating. I should just stay out of this.
