Isaac locked his bike on the rack and jogged to the entrance of the school. He was glad to escape from his dad, and just needed a few minutes to cool off. He noticed a girl peering through the windows, frantically checking the clock. There was no one else, probably because school started in forty five minutes.
"Hey, um, do you need any help?" He asked out loud. Isaac could feel a strong tugging in his gut, but he shook it off. The girl barely looked at him, muttering under her breath.
"I totally got here too early. What the hell now?" She said, but Isaac could hear her even when she was fifty feet away. That was a little strange, but it must be some of the effects kicking in.
"Do you need help with something?" He repeated. The girl gave him a glare, and looked down, but then she shot back up, staring at him in surprise.
"You!" She said. Isaac remembered her voice from last night. She was the werewolf in the woods!
Isaac didn't expect her to look so pretty. Her long brown hair was down and some strands curled up against her pale cheeks, which were almost lit up by her big crystal blue eyes. They were almost captivating, as if you could get sucked into them into her thoughts.
"What are you doing here?" He asked awkwardly. "It's really early."
"Same as you. I'm waiting for the bell. I'm transferring." She said in a small voice. "Did your alpha bite you?" Isaac nodded, rubbing the bite on his arm. She winced.
"That must hurt."
"Did it when you were bitten?" She shook her head, and straighten up a little bit.
"Oh, I wasn't bitten. I'm a pureblood, born into a wolf bloodline." She said with pride.
"Isaac?" Someone called in a gruff tone.
The girl's face fell, and her eyes darted to one side of the school.
"Hell no." She muttered. It was Derek; standing by is car in the parking lot.
"What are you doing talking to her?" Derek asked. Isaac stepped away, unsure what to do.
"Why are you here?" She asked sharply.
"Making sure that my beta survives." He said, a small smile set on his face. "You know, I read that a whole family was found murdered in Arizona, but their sixteen-year-old daughter was never found. Sage Cynthia?" The girl's face paled.
"So, maybe I ran. Wouldn't you if your dying mother made you?" She snapped.
"What about a pack? Don't you want any betas? There can't be two wolf packs." Derek said. Isaac could tell what he was doing, trying to force her under pressure so she would crack.
"That won't happen. I was raised to believe that biting an innocent is a terrible burden if it's unwanted. I'm not making a pack." She said angrily. Her hands were clenched to her sides.
"What about joining one?"
"That depends." She said, cocking her head a tiny bit. Isaac could tell she was fighting for the upper hand. He could feel it in his gut that she had power, maybe more power than Derek did.
He could feel the anger rising in Sage. He could feel the urge to fight radiate from her. It was a strange sensation, but Isaac seemed to know what she was thinking.
Don't try it. He wanted to whisper. Sage's blue eyes flashed a bloody red and she grabbed his arm and pulled him out of Derek's sight. She stared him straight in the eyes.
Why? She seemed to ask.
"Well, big things start out small." Derek called. "If you plan on sticking around then you are going to need a place to go, why don't you pay a visit sometime?" Isaac could hear the door close and the car speed away.
"Well, that's Beacon Hills for you." Isaac said thoughtfully.Sage nodded, smiling with a little bit of ease.
"It's a little strange." She said, staring at the doors. "I really think that I'll like it here."
It might be nice to have a friend. Isaac thought to himself.
"Hey, if you want to hang out later today that would be cool. I don't really have anyone to hang out with so we might just help each other out."
"Maybe." Sage said to him. She had a big smile on now, and for some reason it made Isaac happy. Isaac looked over to the field, where track and field was practicing.
"Do you want to..." He asked, gesturing to the grass field. Sage nodded and they started to walk alongside of the school.
"Is it nice here? The school I mean." Sage asked after a long silence. Isaac shrugged.
"It's okay, but I have absolutely no idea how it's going to go once I, you know..." For once, Isaac was at a loss for words with Sage. She just seemed to have this kind of look, where she knew exactly what you meant.
"That's definitely going to be a big adventure." She muttered, shouldering her bag. "Do you know of any supernaturals?"
"No, not really. I had no idea they existed until last night." Isaac said truthfully. Sage smiled.
"That's probably for the better. Things get a little crazy when you throw shape-shifters into the mix. Trust me, I know."
"Is it true? What Derek said about what happened in Arizona?" Isaac asked, but then felt bad when he saw Sage's face fall and she looked at the ground.
"Unfortunately." She said. "I hated to run, but when you're faced with life or death everything else goes out the window. I want to try and start a new life here, I have already found an old friend who runs the hotel downtown and he's letting me stay there, I'm going to a school, and I think I'm getting there."
Isaac smiled a tiny bit.
"You seem to have everything under control."
"Well, everyone has an escape plan." Sage said, shrugging. She looked at Isaac and laughed. She had a really nice contagious laugh. "Sorry I tend to get very deep sometimes. It's a bad habit when I rant on about something."
Isaac chuckled. "That's fine, it's a nice way to break the ice." Sage smiled, and Isaac actually thought everything was going to be okay.
He couldn't be more wrong.
