She tore through the woods with amazing speed. Tears tore at her face, but adrenaline pulsed through her veins. Branches and leaves would have sliced up her arms and face, but they were already healing.
Run Sage! Run as fast and as far as you can! Don't let them get to you! Her mother's voice rang in her head.
Sage must have crossed the borderline by now. The cold air made her eyes sting. Her legs screamed at her to stop, but she didn't.
Gunshots echoed in her mind. She saw a light up ahead. Sage focused on what it was, a house. It looked like a graveyard.
She was hit with a strong scent of wolf. She slammed on her mental brakes and skidded to a stop. She tripped over with her momentum and fell on her back.
"Crap!" Sage muttered, twisting uncomfortably on the ground
"Get out of here." Someone said. There was a tall guy standing over her. She could make out his figure in the dim light.
"Hello to you too." She muttered as she stood up. Sage set down her shoes and slipped her feet in. Her feet were sliced up from running in the woods barefoot, but they would heal. It's not like she could run from Arizona to California in high heels.
"I said get out of here." He said. Sage glared at him and put her hands on her hips. She raised her eyebrows. She was not in the mood to be messed with. The guy glared at her, his eyes suddenly red. He bared his fangs.
An Alpha?
Quickly recovering, Sage snarled back at him, showing her own red eyes and teeth. His gaze dropped.
"That's right." She said. "Even Alphas have to show one another respect."
"Who's up there?" Someone asked.
"You've got a kid in there?" Sage asked.
"He fell, and I need a pack." He said, as if it was something totally obvious.
Sage looked into a gaping hole and saw a boy in the corner, about her own age. He looked terrified and she felt kinda bad for him. Even though she didn't show it, she was scared too. Scared that she was going to be found and dragged back home.
"You are going to turn him?" She asked. The guy nodded. "Does he know what he's getting himself into?"
"It's his choice." He said. Sage looked at the boy, and decided that this wasn't her fight.
"Well, nice seeing you around. I'd better be going." She said, and started to walk away.
Now I just have to find a high school. Sage thought. The scent of wolf was almost intoxicating, and it made her wonder if this was a highly populated area for shape shifters.
"Wait." Someone called. It was the boy. Sage turned to the pit. "Does being supernatural make you feel stronger?" He asked. "Self esteem-wise."
"It's exhilarating, it makes you feel unstoppable." She said.
"But is there a catch?" He asked.
"Yes, there is always a catch. It might make you feel stronger, but strength has to battle wisdom. A strong and stupid wolf is no better from a wise and weak wolf. You have to find the balance between, and that's what makes you feel strong." Sage said. She thought of how hunters just shot down her entire family. Her three sisters were gone plus her mother.
