None of them came back after that. They left you confused in the bookstore, in the company of James Potter and Peter Pettigrew. You refused to leave the place, hoping that one of them would return, but none of them did, and you ended up taking the last train to Hogwarts.

The next day, you barely saw any of them, and when you did, they did their best to avoid you. You were left hurt and alone, only James tried his best to assure you that they were fine, but he wasn't sure if it was the truth.

James finally got enough of their childish behaviour and them avoiding you, which meant that James had to take care of all three. They always sneaked into the dorm late at night and disappeared early morning. This time James lay awake, he heard the door open and close once but pretended to be asleep. Then he heard it the second time and when the person lay down on his bed, James flew up and used his wand to lock the door and turn on the lights.

"Wake up idiots, it's time to talk," James said as he saw how Peter flew out of the bed in confusion.

Remus who'd been the last one in didn't seem to be bothered by the light, but Sirius who just succeded to fall asleep looked like a zombie seeing daylight for the first time.

"What the hell?" Sirius groaned as he rubbed his eyes. He took a t-shirt from the end of his bed and smoothly put it on, still trying to adjust to the light.

"What is this about?" Remus asked even if he suspected the answer.

"Take one guess dear moony, what could this be about?" James mocked but then sighed. "I'm sorry, I'm just tired that's all."

"Yeah, that's what happens when you decide to have a talk in the middle of the night," Sirius rolled his eyes.

"Perhaps if you two didn't act like ghosts I wouldn't have to keep it in the middle of the night," James pointed out. "What is wrong with you two? Snuffles? Moony?"

"Don't call me Snuffles," Sirius hissed.

"Then answer the question. Why are you mad at each other?" James almost begged for an answer.

He hated seeing his friends like this, so far apart, separated. They were his brothers, they were a family to him. James would trust his life to each and every one of them if he needed to. Seeing his brothers avoiding each other, reminded James of one of his biggest fears, that they one day would fall apart.

"I'm not mad," Remus muttered lowly.

Sirius didn't reply, he simply just stared at the floor.

"It's my fault," He finally said.

"What?" James turned to his best friend.

"This. Is my fault," Sirius repeated the word.

Remus was caught off guard. In the past days, Remus had blamed himself for the anger that he caused Sirius, the anger and pain. Hearing Sirius saying that it was his own fault was something Remus wasn't prepared for.

"No," Remus protested. "It's not his fault. It's mine."

A faint smile grew on James' face as he heard the words, he understood now. He saw what they didn't see.

"Let's head out Wormtail," James said. "It seems like they need time for themselves."

"If I fall asleep I won't bother them," Peter complained. "Just let me stay in bed."

"Peter," James glared at him slowly and the rat-boy sighed.

The two boys headed out, but before James closed the door, he said that he refused to let them leave the room unless they'd become friends again. When the doors closed the two boys just stared at each other.
