Chapter Fifteen

It takes a second after my hand takes my shoulder blade to process what happened. Josh looks at my shoulder quickly before looking up. I hear him breathing heavily. Josh helps me sit up. “Scarlett, are you okay?!” Josh asks.

I know I won’t make it much longer. I think the bullet is too far in, and too close to my heart or something that would make me die. “I’m gonna die,” I barely whisper.

“Don’t say that. I’ll get you to a hospital,” Josh says.

“I have nothing – nothing – to live for. Just let me die-.”

“No!” Josh startles me, and distracts me from the extreme pain in my shoulder. “I’m not going to let you die! Don’t even for a second think that I will!” Josh cups my face in his hands and leans in to kiss me. After a little while, he pulls back. “I love you. Nothing less,” Josh says. “I’m getting you to a hospital.”

“Where’s the person who shot me?” I ask.

                “I don’t know. I didn’t see anyone.”

                “Check.”

Josh swallows, and nods. He gets up, and moves in the general direction from where the bullet came from. Josh is about to look behind the counter of the kitchen when someone pops out from there, and bangs Josh into the wall. He has a ski mask on so I don’t know who it is. Josh pushes the person off of him, and the person just stops. “You’re not hurt?” they ask confused.

“What? Am I supposed to be?” Josh asks.

“Then who did I shoot?!” The person turns around, and starts walking toward me. Josh quickly turns him around, and punches him out cold.

“Easier than I thought,” Josh says. “Come on.” Josh picks me up, and rushes me as fast as he can to his car. Before I know it, we’re at the hospital and I’m being knocked out, as if I wasn’t already about to pass out halfway to the hospital.

When I wake up, I’m in my bed. My right shoulder, the good one, is on the bed while the left one is up. I’m on my right side.  I try sitting up, but the bullet wound hurts so I can’t. I yawn, and close my eyes again. Suddenly I hear footsteps. I look around as much as I can, but I’m facing a wall. I try to sleep again, but then the door opens, slowly. I feel someone’s hand brush back my hair. Josh’s hand. “You awake?” I hear him ask.

I nod my head. “Yeah. How long did I sleep?” Josh helps me sit up. I rub my eyes with my hand, and then look at Josh. “What happened?” Josh has a cut on his lip, a cut on his cheek, and some kind of burn on his neck.

“That guy who shot you went a little crazy,” Josh says. “Took a while before I could unmask him. He took a match and burned my neck. Minor burn though. Then he cut me with his own knife and busted my lip.”

                “Who was it?”

“I don’t know. Someone named Daniel Wilson.”

                “That’s Danny’s friend!”

“Oh. Well that gives us something to think about. You alright though?”
