Chapter Six
Everything that just happened, it’s so random. Josh paid for a new phone for me. Danny and I fought. I nearly got hit by car. Josh saved my life while Danny only warned me. It’s too rapidly random. I can’t process it well. I study myself for any injuries, and find just a bruise and a scrape from sliding across the pavement. Josh helps me up, and I brush myself off a little.
“Are you okay?” Josh asks steadily.
“I’m fine,” I say. I look at Danny, on the verge of tears. “Would you die for me?” I blurt out at him.
He looks confused. Then that vanishes from his face. Danny looks like he’s trying to put what he wants to say into words. Danny scratches his neck, and looks guilty. “Would you at least risk your life?” I ask. He looks even more guilty and goes red. I start to say something else, but turn, and walk away.
“I would die for you,” I hear. I stop in my tracks, rub my left forearm, cock my head slightly to the left, and blush. Josh must see it if he’s looking. I turn, and walk to my car smiling. I hate Danny, but I love Josh.
I would die for you. Josh’s words repeat in my head. I don’t think you’re crazy. You’re very talented. I would die for you. Josh…
I drive home to the art supply store I work at, and purchase some more paint, more canvases, and a smock because I need them. I go to the music store about a block away, and get some extra strings for my guitar. I head back home, put everything I bought away, and figure I should start playing around with the phone Josh –
Phone!
Josh!
I must’ve dropped the phone when Josh saved me. Josh was still with Danny when I left. What if something happened? I pick up the house phone to call Josh. No answer, just voicemail. I try again, and get a respond. “Hello?” Josh answers.
“Hey, it’s Scarlett,” I say. “Did you see the phone you got me? I think I dropped it when-.”
Josh cuts me off to spare me from saying what happened. “Yeah. I have it now. I could bring it to you now if you want?”
“Sure,” I say, and hang up.
I set up all the things I bought, but just leave the strings on the coffee table. I take out one of my paint pallets and sit it on the desk. I move one of the paintings I want to work on – one of my dogs, Sandy, who died when I was fifteen which I’m actually doing pretty well on – next to the desk. I’m about to start painting the tennis ball in her mouth when there’s a knock on the door. I don’t bother with trying to put the brush down carefully and just take it with me to the door in my smock. I look through the peephole, and see Josh. I let him in.
He says, “Hey. Here’s the phone.” Josh hands me the box, and I take it with the bottom of my hands so I don’t get paint all over it.
I put it on the coffee table quickly. I say, “You can stay if you want, I’m just painting.” I run back excitedly to where I’m painting, and can tell Josh followed.
“That’s amazing.” He comments when he see the picture of Sandy.
“Thanks. It’s my dog Sandy. She died a few years ago.” I start mixing different shades of green, and adding black, white, yellow, anything to get the perfect shade of green for the tennis ball.
