Chapter Ten

Josh rubs my cheek with his thumb, and I suddenly feel a rage of anger burst into myself. I don’t know why. Again. I try to ignore it, make sure I don’t scream or anything. My mind goes completely blank. I don’t know what I’m thinking of. I feel something press against my lips and once I get my mind working I see it’s Josh. He kissed me again. I find myself leaning in against him, and after a few seconds, Josh pulls back.

“Sorry,” Josh says, “I know you’re still trying to get over-.”

“It’s fine, Josh,” I say and blush.

Josh smiles a little, and looks at me. Neither of know what to say now.

I take a sip of my water, and looks down at my lap. Awkward silences are annoying. No one is saying anything, barely doing anything, and probably not looking at each other. It’s weird. Hence awkward silence.

Josh takes my free hand and I suddenly want to hug him. I put the glass of water down, and Josh suddenly sits next to me. I wrap my arms around him, and my head makes a home on his shoulder. Josh’s arm immediately wraps around me, and my feet prop up on the couch. I can feel Josh’s muscles tense slightly, probably because he’s thinking of everything I just told him. I know it’s a lot to take in. Really, a lot. But I don’t want him sad. Though I don’t think I can make him too happy right now.

“What makes you happy?” Josh asks me.

“The arts. Good surprises. Animals. I guess,” I respond.

                “Okay.” There’s another silence.

I fall asleep on Josh’s shoulder a few minutes later. When I wake up, it’s in my bed. Josh must’ve carried me. I look at the time, and see it’s almost ten.

Ten! I need to get to the art store! I need to be there by ten! I quickly get into my little uniform – Shirt with the store name, Paintbrush Place; nametag; red pants with four pockets – and run out the door. I drive over to the store, and get there just in time. I see Dana standing in wait for me behind the counter.

                ‘Hey,” I say.

“Hey,” Dana replies. “I’ll work with you today, I don’t want to go home.”

                “Why?”

Dana shrugs her shoulders, and rubs her eyes. “What’s up with Danny?”

“I don’t want to talk about it. He’s gone. I hope.”

                “Oh.”

We don’t really get many costumers, but are eager to help the ones that do come. When one guy comes in, he looks down the whole time. I swear he’s familiar. I know he is. I just can’t see his face, and if I could I might be able to tag a name. I ask him, “Need help, sir?”

He faces my direction. “Yes,” he says. The guy pulls out a gun just as I’m about to put a name on the voice. “Who should I shoot first?” Dana and I exchange a look. A scared look. We put out hands behind our heads, and the guy approaches us. “One of you girls open the register.” Nice… I should’ve tried to sleep in. Then again, Dana could be here with no one to help her. And I don’t want that. “Open it!” The man nearly yells. He points the gun at Dana, and to me says, “Open it.”

I slowly walk toward the cash register. I open it, and back away. “Okay…” I say frightened. I’m still struggling with a name, but I need to see his face.

“Move away.” Dana and I both move away, from behind the counter, and let the man go to the register. He fills a sack with money, completely emptying the cash register. I notice the reason I can’t see his face is because he has a mask on, a white hockey mask I think. He stuffs the sack into the backpack he has, and points the gun at Dana. The guy grabs my right arm tightly. He yanks me with him outside. I want to scream for Dana but realize it could result in both of us getting shot. I’m thrown into the back of a black car. A different person, also wearing a mask, cups my mouth, and blind folds me. I feel him tie my wrists behind my back tightly with rope, and then gag me.

Nice. I think. I’m never going to be happy…

After what I estimate to be a half hour, I’m forced out of the car, and taken into a room, I think. I’m tied tightly to a chair. I feel someone breathing on my face. They un-gag me, and then I feel their lips press into mine. I immediately feel enraged. I’m horrible mad at whoever this is. I do have my prediction though.

The person pulls back, and un-blinds me. I adjust my eyes to the light, and see Danny. My prediction. Wow. Danny is just… damn him…

“Nice to see you, Scarlett,” he says.

                “Bad to see you, Danny.”

“I see what you did there.”

“Uh-Huh. Yeah. Why am I here?”

“I need to talk to you, but you won’t let me.”

“If you just wanted to talk to me, why’d you want the money from the store?”

“I need it. But I just want to ask you one question. Are you going to get mad?”

“I already am mad, you ass,” Every time I see Danny I want to curse him out. That says a lot considering I don’t like to curse.

Danny sighs. “Will you forgive me? I never-.”

“Danny… If you love on person, and fall in love with another, then choose the second because if you truly loved the first you wouldn’t have fallen for the second.”

                “But-.”

“You probably tricked both of us into thinking you loved me. Maybe you did, but it faded away enough for you to fall in love again but with someone else. Can you leave me alone? I just want to be left alone. Is that so much to ask? I have a friend, and maybe two. So you don’t have to keep coming after me like this. Just stop before this whole thing gets out on the news because of the possible crimes you could commit after this because you already kidnapped me and robbed a store.”

Danny looks at me. “I don’t want to lose you…”

“You already did. It’s no one’s fault but your own. Just leave me alone, and get over it.”

I look down at my feet, and see that they’re tied to the legs of the chair. No way to escape. Either someone saves me, or Danny lets me go.
