Chapter Twenty-Nine
“Do you have an ear piece?” I ask. “Can Danny hear us?”
“Only me,” Josh says like he did before. “Why?”
I tilt my head back again, and take pull Josh down to kiss me. I pull the ear piece out of Josh’s ear. I can easily destroy it in my fist, which I do. I stuff my hands in my pockets casually after letting Josh’s lips go. I drop the pieces of the device in my pocket, and then we stand there in silence.
“How good is the aim of the man on the fire escape?” I ask.
“Not as good as I had expected when Danny had me watch. Do you have a plan?” I nod.
We stand there, still, silent. I quickly turn to my left so I turn away from the man, push Josh away as I take his gun, and half scream when I fire the gun out the open window. There’s not cry or yell or scream in return. The man is completely gone. I run to the window, and I don’t see him on the ground, I look in all directions, and I don’t see him at all.
Paranoia takes over. It always comes fast. I turn to Josh and he looks at me funny. “Am I crazy?” I ask him. “Or am I just hurting and scaring people?”
He doesn’t answer the questions, he just says, “You were gonna kill him?”
“I don’t even know.” It’s true. I don’t know whether I would kill him. Maybe I shouldn’t have fired a gun though. I realized my neighbors could have heard it. The walls are thick between the apartments though. Besides, if they did hear it than they could think it was from outside. “Do you know where the man might be, Josh?”
“No. But… you wanted to kill him?” I sigh.
“I said I didn’t know. Are there any other people?” Josh shakes his head. I run into Josh’s arms, and he wraps me in them. I talk fast. “I’m telling you that was the only time I had ever fired a gun. I’m serious. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
“I know, Scarlett. Shut up, okay? I forgive you.” Josh holds me tighter. “Danny forced me before I got here. It was his gun. He doesn’t have one now.”
“Is he going to come up here and hurt us?”
“Probably.” As quickly as I can in my state I run to the door so I can lock it. It bursts open before I can turn the lock. I step back quickly as Danny walks in the apartment.
“You idiot!” he screams at Josh. “What the hell was that?” I slowly close the door, and press my back to it. My face is looking at the floor, and I wait for whatever happens to happen. I’m no use in this situation now. I can’t face Danny.
“You,” I hear him say. I look up slowly and see Danny’s enraged self walk over to me. “Did he tell you everything?”
“No,” I lie. “Josh didn’t say anything. I made assumptions. I think I was right.”
“Seems like you.” He says it in way to let me know it was a trait he hated about me.
“Why would you have someone else kill me?” I ask him. “Why don’t you do it yourself? Because you don’t have the guts?” He says nothing. “Are you like a guy from a Fan Fiction who tries to interfere with the happiness and mess it all up in just five minutes? Are you the one who tries to kill the one he’s mad at, and the one who left him? Except he never seems to do it himself, only with the help of others or the threat of death to the closest and most unlikely person to kill the girl he wants? Are you him? Because if this life of mine has been a Fan Fic than I think that’s who you’d be.”
