The Girl

I kept talking to the little girl, trying to get her to calm down. Jeff left to get Slenderman.

She didn't know her name, nor her age. She didn't know who or where her family was. She said that she'd been living alone in the woods for a "long time."

However long that was, I didn't know.

"What's going on?" Slender came to the door, his tendrils lashing this way and that. The girl screamed at the sight of him, and at the same time, the sky lit up and a loud boom followed.

I mean, I could see why she screamed. He was like ten feet tall and had no face. Not to mention the eight large and razor-sharp appendages protruding from his back.

But, what's up with the crazy weather? There wasn't a cloud in the sky literally five minutes ago.

"Come on, let's get you inside." I urged her in, but she planted her feet. I didn't try to force her, but I knew that she would be killed if I left her outside for too long.

"B-b-but--" she pointed at Slenderman, seeming absolutely terrified.

"It's okay. Although he may appear scary, he's a friend of mine!"

Slenderman scoffed. He clearly didn't like being called my friend, especially since he was technically my boss.

"A f-friend? What's that?"

I sighed. "Okay, how do I put this... A friend is someone who is kind to you, and you're kind to them."

"Oh, so he's kind?"

"I am not kind, nor a friend!" Slender butted in, sounding demonic. Geez.

"Just shut up and let me talk, okay?" I retorted. The girl cowered in fear.

"How dare you--"

"Okay, okay guys, chill out," Kate came out with us, then saw her. "Who the hell is this?"

"This is another friend. I know they all look scary, but they won't hurt you," I petted the girl's tangled blonde hair, ignoring Kate. "Come on in."

"O-okay," her voice shook. I took her hand and walked her into the foyer. Only now did I notice the color of her eyes: a stormy gray.

"Don't you dare ignore me!" Kate snapped.

I heard the sound of moving chairs from the dining room, followed by footsteps.

"Who's she?" Clockwork asked.

"I don't know," I responded. "She doesn't know anything about herself. She kind of just...showed up."

Clockwork pinched the bridge of her nose. "Well, what are we going to do with her?"

"Eat her kidneys?" EJ suggested. The girl cowered behind me.

Sally came to see what all the commotion was when she saw her. "Hi! What's your name?"

"I don't know," the small child sniffled, seeming a little calmer. The rain started to lighten up.

"Oh, well that's okay! I'm Sally. Play with me?"

"I-I guess..." the girl looked down, smiled a little, and took Sally's hand. They ran off to her room.

"Well, now that the kids are gone, what are we going to do with her?" Kate inquired.

"Honestly, I don't--"  Clockwork began.

"We send her to the foster care system in town, where she'll forget that she ever saw us." Slender decided.

"Why not just let her stay? It's clear that she's been lost for a while, and she doesn't remember anything," I suggested. "Perfect for training and turning her into one of us."

"But she's terrified of everybody here. Did you see the way she was shaking whenever I showed up? That could be dangerous to us if she runs away," Kate reasoned.

"She's not scared of Sally. Besides, where would she go? Even she doesn't remember how long she's been there."

"She could get DNA tested and be sent off to live with her relatives. Anywhere is better than here."

"Maybe, but there's something strange about her. Whenever she started crying, it started raining at the same time, even though the sky was clear a few seconds before."

"That is strange, indeed." Slenderman agrees.

"It's probably just a coincidence," Kate argued.

"Well, I have heard of some humans being born with unexplainable abilities, but I thought it was only a myth. After all, humans are, well, human. They don't possess any kind of supernatural powers."

"I say we keep her and see what becomes of her," Eyeless Jack added. "And if she turns out to be a disappointment, then I can eat her kidneys."

"Yeah, I-I agree," Toby piped up.

I glanced at Jeff, who nodded. "Alright, it's settled then. We keep her until she proves herself useless to us."

"What a way to put it," Clockwork chuckled.

"I mean, it's true."

Sally came running in, the girl in tow. "We're gonna play outside now! "

"Before you do, I need to ask her something," I said, gesturing to the nameless girl.

"Wh-what is it?" she seemed scared as she was glancing at the others behind me.

"Do you want to stay here? You can play with Sally whenever you want, and I'll be here."

"I-I don't know... They're scary," she pointed to them.

"Don't worry, we won't hurt you. You're special."

"What does special mean?" she asked innocently.

"Special means that you're different from everyone else, but in a good way. You get me?"

"I guess..."

"Good. Now, we need to set up a room for you, unless you want to share one with Sally, if she's okay with it?"

"It's fine!" Sally smiled innocently.

"Y-yeah, I'd like to share a room with Sally," the girl glanced over at her new friend.

"Also, what should we call you? It can be any name you want," I said softly, trying not to scare her.

"I- I don't know," she looked down.

"How about Katrina?" Sally suggested.

"I like that," the girl, now named Katrina, beamed.

"That's great. Now, you two can play outside. Just be careful, okay? Don't go too far."

"Okay! C'mon, Katrina!" Sally grabbed her hand and ran outside.

"You're good with kids," Clockwork mentioned as I stood straight.

"I guess..."

"Do you ever want your own?"

"I mean...maybe? I'm not sure. It seems like a lot of work and responsibility." I took a peek at Jeff, who was a few feet away and playing with his knife, pretending not to listen. Typical.

"Yeah, that is true. But personally, I wouldn't mind having children," Clockwork shrugged, glancing at Toby.

Toby clearly got the hint. His cheeks became cherry red as he started stuttering more. "I-I g-guess th-that'd be f-fine. Whatev-ever y-you want, my Clocky!"

Laughter erupted from us. Once we started, we couldn't stop!

That is until Slendy yelled at us to "stop acting like children."

"What a party pooper," I leaned over and whispered to the nearest person beside me. And, lo and behold, it's none other than the one and only BEN Drowned.

"Right? C'mon, I won't poop on your party," he whispered back and winked.

Jeff must've heard because he came full speed at BEN, knife in hand. I barely had time to blink before they started fighting...

...Over me...

...Again...

Fuckin' idiots.
