Ada

Ada was trying to read.

Music blared from downstairs, ruining the comfortable silence of her room, a reminder that she had to be at the party. She didn't want to go but it was expected of her. She was already late.

Ada thought of her sister's easy smiles, the disappointed set of her father's lips, and her mother's repetitious sighs, bone tired of their condescending attitude.

She got up from her bed and went to the open window, staring at the night sky flecked with stars. The cool autumn wind caressed her face. She closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. The smell of freedom filled her nostriles, a forgotten dream.

"I thought you were getting ready." Her Mother's voice forced her back to reality.

"Ready to throw myself out of this fucking window. You're kinda interrupting." Ada said without opening her eyes, or turning around.

"Not this again. Come on, every one's waiting for you. You aren't even dressed yet."

Ada whipped around, her voice bitter. "I'm not in the mood, plus no one gives a shit weather I'm there or not. We both know that. It's all about Father showing off and imposing his power on us, just because he can."

Mother picked up the green dress that was sprawled on the swiveling chair. "Ada don't make such a big deal out of this. You can meet some new people. It'll be good for you..."

"You mean the people that Father wants me to meet." Ada spat the word out. "No, thanks. I still rather jump off the window."

Mother sighed. "Then do it for me. I'm tired of seeing you two fight all the time."

"And who's fault is that?"  She snapped.

"Please Ada. You don't want to make him angry again, do you?"

She pinched her lips in annoyance. "I'll be down in five. Just because I want to get you off my back. I don't care about any of this stupid shit, or you for that matter."

"Thank you." Her Mother looked both releaved, and hurt.

After she left, Ada put on the green dress, applied some make up, and went downstairs, hoping an earthquake would occure and save her from the inevitable agony of having to sit through another party with her famiy.

The DJ's loud music was  more unbearable when Ada reached the great ballroom, where a lot of people were dancing, talking, and drinking, most of whom she didn't know.

Ada elbowed her way through the hot, sweaty crowd, head already aching from the loud music. Mother waved at her from across the room, sitting in a corner with Father, and her sister. Ada walked towards them as slowly and reluctantly as she could.

"Well would you look at that? Our princess has finaly decided to join us. How very nice of you." Father drawled.

"I'm no princess, and you're no king. It's about time you get that." Ada answered, ignoring her mother's glare.

Her Father's face reddened a bit.

"Stop it Steven ,you too Ada." Mother chided them while fixing her already neat blond hair that matched her long golden dress. "She's here now. That's all that matters."

"Oh yeah, let's ignore the fact that we hate eachother's guts, just so we can show everyone what a big, unhappy, disfunctional family we are." Ada snorted.

"If you're going to behave like that maybe you should go back to your room." Her Father said.

"If you insist."

"Sit down." Her Mother scolded her.

Ada rolled her eyes, but obeyed.

"Oh look it's Ben." Her sister's cheery voice saved them from another fight. She stood up, red dress twirling, eyes glowing, and greeted her boyfriend with a long kiss.

Ada snatched up her untouched champagne glass from the table.

"I need to refill my drink." Father said to no one in particular, and walked towards the bar on the other side of the ball room.

"Will you please stop acting like this?" Mother hissed, leaning towards her while eyeing Nora and Ben.

"I said I'd come, not that I'd behave. You should have been more specific with your terms and conditions." Ada sipped her drink.

"Ada..." Her Mother started again.

"You look quiet lovely tonight Mrs Brooks." Ben said with a dashing smile, saving Ada from another round of lectures.

"Thank you dear." She gave him a tight smile.

"So does Ada, don't you think Benny?" Nora told him with a sweet smile.

Ada wanted to smack it off her self-righteous face.

"Absolutely. Will you honor me with a dance?" Ben ran a hand through his blond hair.

"No."

He flashed her what he tought was a winning smile. "Come on, just one dance. I promis you won't regret it."

Ada rose an eyebrow. "Is Nora really that boring? Who would have thought? The horror."

Nora glared at her sister, cheeks reddening.

Ben looked uncomfortable. "No of course not. I just thought maybe you wanted to..."

"No thank you." Ada sipped her champagne slowly, smirking.

"Fine, then I'll dance with him. Your loss." Nora said with contempt, grabbing Ben's arm rather harshly, making him wince.

Ada raised her glass to them "He's all yours sister." She knocked back her drink, watching the golden couple disappear among the dancing crowd.

"Your manners are deteriorating at an alarming rate." Mother sighed, massaging her temples.

"Blame the asshole responsible for this boring party." Ada retorted.

"Your Father is doing his best..."

"Bullshit. We haven't had a single moment of peace, or happiness ever since moving here. This isn't living. Why do we have to settle for less?"

Her mother sighed exasperately. "Why do you have to be so difficult?"

"How can you say that? How can you be so blind? So indifferent?" Ada bristled.

"Why do you have to be such a pessimist? Look at the bright side..." Her voice was ice cold.

"There is no bright side." Ada shouted. "You're insufferable, all of you. I wish this damn house would burn down, maybe then I'd be free of this joke you call a family." She slammed her glass on the table so hard it shattered.

"Ada that's enough." She jumped at the sound

Ada felt a bit guilty, but didn't let it show. Thankfully no one noticed. Apperently the party was way more interesting.

"Next time I won't come, no matter how much you beg." Ada turned her back on her Mother, and tried to make a way for herself in the crowded room.

She was too angry to care if she was stepping on anyones foot.
