James"You're still here." He eyed Jack who was sitting on the hood of his vintege BMW, back to the windshield.
"I would never leave when you need me. You know that." He pulled on his cigarette.
James joined him on the hood, like he'd done many times before. "Thank you."
"You want a drag?" He held out the cigarette.
"More like ten." James chuckled and took it from his fingers. "I'm sorry about what I said. What happened to Viv wasn't your fault. I was just angry."
Jack sighed. "We both said regretable shit. I'm sorry too."
"If you ever want to talk about Maggie I'm here."
"You need to let Ada go Jamie." Jack's eyes were glued to the horizen.
"I already have. I just want to make sure..."
"Oh please." Jack snorted. "I literaly raised you. Do you really think I'd fall for your bullshit like everyone else?"
"It's not bullshit." James said defensively, pulling hard on the cigarette.
"It is. You need to stop chasing Rose's ghost..."
"This has nothing to do with Rose." James shivered.
"This has everything to do with Rose. You're trying to replace her with Ada and you need to stop." Jack's voice was stern. "You think I didn't see the way you looked at her? As if she was your savior..."
"Jack I'm not in the mood for this right now..."
"Well too bad..." He gave his brother a pointed look.
"I'm serious..."
"So am I. They might have the same eye color, but they're nothing alike..."
"I know that." James snapped. His hand shook as he brought the cigarette to his lips.
"Apparently you don't, otherwise you wouldn't be acting like this. Maggie is dead, but it doesn't change the facts. This thing between you, and Ada will never work..."
"Jack, just fucking drop it."
"Not until you understand..."
"Oh believe me, I understand perfectly." James blew out the smoke aggressively. "Rose is dead. Ada might be too, but even if she isn't, it won't matter because I'm never anyone's first choice or second or third. I'm a pathatic loser, and I know it. You don't have to keep reminding me."
James took a shaky drag of the cigarette, and tried to fight the tears burning the back of his eyes.
"Jamie." Jack said in a soothing voice, and put a hand around his shoulder, pulling him closer to himself. "I didn't want to make you feel worse..."
"Well you did." James sniffed, and tried to shove him away, but Jack held on to him tighter.
"I just hate seeing you like this, pinning after someone who will never be yours. It breaks my heart." He kissed the top of James's head, like he used to do when he was a kid, and James slumped against him.
"I'm sorry I'm such a failure." James mumbled, taking another shaky drag.
"You have nothing to be sorry for." Jack whispered against his hair. "You're perfect." Then drew back, and looked at James with his kind eyes. "there will be others. People who'll look at you, and see only you, people who'll choose only you..."
James snorted. "I rather hear your harsh truth."
"This is also the truth." He said with a little smile.
"No it's just a sweet lie."
"That's were you're wrong Jamie. Truth isn't always harsh, lies aren't always sweet either."
"Maybe." James jumped off the hood.
Jack did the same. "Make fun of me all you want, but some day that person will come along, and you'll see I was right." He snatched the cigarette from his hand.
"Do you have any whiskey in the car? I'm freezing and don't you dare start another argument with Nora when we get back."
He chuckled, and took a lazy drag. "I make no promises."
